connecting 3 sets of speakers

I want to hook up 3 pairs of speakers in my studio, so I can A-B-C my mix. I
purchased a radio-shack "box" that allows me to do this. The problem is my
main speakers (near-field monitors) are 4 ohms and the other 2 pairs of
speakers are 8 ohms. The instructions that came with the "box" says it can
be used with peaker systems that have an impedance of 8 ohms or more. This
"box" will allow me to play all 3 speaker systems at once (which I don't
want-but it's the only thing I found to connect multiple speakers).

I assume this will not work, or do damage to my power amp?

Can't see why it would be impedance rated, unless it's got a transformer in there. This may be to load the amp with 8 ohms when 3x 8 ohm speakers are connected. I would doubt this though, and if it has such a transformer it will probably degrade the sound as it will be cheap...

Should be fine as long as you only switch on one set at any one time.

Yes you have to worry about too low of an impedance for your poweramp. All these in parallel would give a nominal 2 ohm impedance which might cause smoke to escape from your power amp (depends on the power amp)

I've had a few of those switches thru here. That is all they are is switches. As long as you don't turn speakers on such that you go lower than your amp likes you will be fine.
