alright, here it is... i wanna go deaf. i like my tunes loud as hell. i'm tired of buying comps and not being satisfied. this time i'm gonna build a very loud sql system. i think my only option without running multiple drivers and tweets is to go with an active 2-way system. does anybody run horns anymore? they were huge like 3 years ago. i wish the Image Dynamics CD2COMP's weren't so exspensive. are the lower lines comparible?
also, who maks a good 7"/8" midbass driver that will match-up pretty good with horns. i plan on powering these mids with either the zapco 750.2 or the audison vxr 400.2

A hundred of them would accomplish your goal of going deaf rather fast.
sounds like a "line-array" home audio set-up. lets keep it to car audio.
I don`t know the price for the Image Dynamics. A smith horn would be flat and also fit into a car. But this one from Visaton isn`t cheap, either.

What's scary is I've actually seen installs like that in a vehicle
Absolutely no potential for a good soundstage...are you actually concerned with getting a good stereo image or are you just concerned with volume?
These would both go well with horns

If you want to go with horns it's usually cheaper to pick up a pair of used horn bodies for about $100 and buy the drivers seperately.
I used these BMS drivers and really liked them

These Radians are also nice as well

i had someone tell me theres no such thing as sql. he mentioned that horns are pure sq and that i would not be happy with the sound if i listen to mainly metal. what do y'all think/
what is the comparison between image dynamics amd bms? i thought the cd2 pro neos were the best
I listen to mostly metal and my horns played it better than any of the other speakers I've used.
The cd2 pro neo drivers are just rebadged B&C DE500's

I liked the BMS drivers because they are a very smooth sounding without the harshness some other horns have.

i wonder if bs makes mylar dome horn. i see the link you sent the horns are titanium dome. wouldn't be tad bit on the bright side?
Horns produce high-SPL with low-distortion, even the worst designed lower-cost ones reach these goals quite easily, but this is usually at the expense of non-flat frequency response. Careful equalisation is usually required to get the best from horns, only the best combinations of horn and compression driver result in reasonably flat frequency response. For example, most (big) horn tweeters have its highest efficiency between 3k-5k and require attenuation there and boost above 10k. Crossover design is also quite tricky, usually requiring to apply delays to the signal to get the best results. A low-cost yet very useful piece of gear that allows to equalize, delay and cross-over horns is Behringer DCX2496.
By the way, the *only* way to obtain proper imaging inside a car (without sitting yourself in the center) is by delaying the nearest channel to make both appear at the same distance from the listener (it becomes actually more complex when tweeter, midrange and woofer are not at the same distance of the listener to start with).
