Comparing

How does one compare an AC voltage from an audio amplifier to a DC voltage. I'm currently trying to build a voltage limiter, but can't get the comparator to think that the AC input isn't "float."

I'm guessing that it is the difference between the grounds, but I'm unsure. Any input is greatly appreciated!

This is the basics of what I want: AC exceeds the level of my DC voltage and the light turns on for the moment where the level is exceeded. Eventually I will sink the extra power to ground (haven't decided how yet), and the speaker will play the DC level voltage until the AC signal comes down in amplitude.

It's very archaic and wouldnt 'sound' that good when in protection mode, but I have to start somewhere so, sophistication will have to wait.

Thanks for the response!
