JLH Ripple Eater

Bill
The Suntan CD286 2,200uF 10V capacitors have a quoted ESR of
0.036 ohms at 100KHZ. Ripple current is 1690 mA

There have been well over 50 JLHs constructed in both the U.K. and Australia that I am aware of, and feedback indicates that the so called "Audio Grade" capacitors impart their own "house" flavour to the sound of the JLH,and not just added "hiss". The majority of these JLHs are being used with the same headphone amplifier circuit, and most people would agree that it is far easier to detect small changes in sound quality when using headphones.
The same applies to the use of Rubycon (etc.) capacitors in a simple LM317T/LM337T dual regulator.
Our group has also reported further improvements with these PSUs if the typical 1N400X rectifier diodes are replaced with
UF 4002 types.Even better , appears to be the 35nS 1A 100V SF12 diode which is available from Mouser for about 25C each.
1N5819 Schottky diodes were also tried, but these were found to impart a small amount of colouration to the sound, described as "haze".
Why not post your veroboard layout anyway, so that other people can try a JLH with your choice of 1uF capacitors ? In fact, a lot of people may try a JLH if the need for a special PCB is removed ! Incidentally, reputable brand name BD139 and BD140 , (Philips etc.) if selected for HFE of >120, work well in the circuit.
I am sure you would agree, that the JLH has numerous uses in a variety of equipment ?
