I see a couple of these on eBay. I've read that the TFT500 was DIY-able, but the ribbon cables are short. Is the TFT-5000 similar(or the same)? Anyone know the specs, I can't find anything other than the fact it's active matrix and 1024*768. Also, no power, do most LCD monitors take standard adapter voltages/heads? If the specs are decent I might get one, there's three for $85 a piece, working, with no defects. I'd be willing to take a gamble, If it didn't work out I could always use it for it's intended purpose.
Tricky AC Adapter
Hi there!
The old Compaq TFT monitors are a bit tricky. I bought an old Compaq TFT 450 which is basically the same as the TFT 5000 except for the possibility to use the screen vertically. They have this special Compaq-only AC Adapter which costs around $120. It uses AC220/110 for input and puts out 12V and 5V at 2A plus the plug is PS/2 type. Two pins of the PS/2 connector are 12V, two are 5V and the other two are GND.
So either you have to buy a new AC Adapter for around 120 bucks or you have to go and build one from two other ac adapters one with 12V and one with 5V, put them together with a PS/2 connector and there you go.
Not easy, but doable.
Good luck!

I might be disassembling one of these LCD panels myself. Is there any difficulty with ribbon cables or the pcba's orientation with respect to the LCD?
Thanks
Thanks
Hi There drwenkman,
You wouldn't happen to know which pins are 12 & 5 vollts
I am going to try I may get a tft450 / 5000 this weekend but no psu 🙁
If this is the coonnector
_______*___*
____*____I____*
____*_________*
which would be 5V/12V/Gnd
Thanks for you help

I've got a FP500 where the psu broke down a few months ago.
I just got a 7810 (10 volt 2 Ah regulator) and hooked it up with an old 20 Volt printer supply and it workes great actually better then before.

Hi there!
the pins of the male connector should be like this:
______GND_GND
____5V____I____12V
____5V_________12V
Enjoy your TFT 450/5000!

Hi,
I'm quite new to electronics, but I got also one of those TFT450 without the powersupply.
What I don't know: Is this the pin layout, that one sees, when one looks at the male connector (as one would do it normally), or the way it should be soldered to the connector (as if one would look from inside the cable to the connector)?
Can someone help me with this?
compaq TFT5000
the compaq TFT5000 will work, but you will have to extend 1 of the 3 FFC's. ( the smaller one)
i can get you a pic if you would like.
as for the power supply. i have a TFT500, it uses a normal barrel type plug. it takes 12V 3amp input. it also does have this PS2 looking type connector but i believe this to be a service port ( correct me if i'm wrong.)
the power input i'm using in on the opposit side.
here's a pic.

TFT450 being different.
Hi DR_WEH,
The 450 has only the VGA-connector and the female PS/2 one.
Check postings #2 and #6 for some other details.
For the power supply I am considering to use an old AT-psu or the psu from an external SCSI box. I was told, that it is a bad idea to connect two power supploies (as suggested in posting #2).
The 450 has two fuses quite near the PS/2 connector, which lets the power connector thing sound more likely.
But it's really hard to guess, what belongs where.
Yeah, if needed, I can also take a picture of that (it's currently open anyway).

Hi Dee,
I personally didn't yet get to try it. (it's not top on my priotrity list)
But I got the following URL with some more infos, and that sounds a bit helpful.
http://orionrobots.co.uk/features/lcdmonitorguide.html (scroll down, some interesting likes are at the end)
But I can't really give any guarantee... my tft450 is from a dust-bin, so I don't really know, if it works at all, so I can't really break more 😉
(I saw your mail, hope it's okay to answer here)

Okay guys...I'm confused!
Above should be a link to a pic of a ps/2 plug.
If I interpret the text image of the ps/2 plug from the previous posts, then:
pin 1 = 5v
pin 2 = 12v
pin 3 = 5v
pin 4 = 12v
pin 5 = gnd
pin 6 = gnd
However on another site, it was stated:
pin 1 = gnd
pin 2 = nc
pin 3 = 12v
pin 4 = 5v
pin 5 = 12v
pin 6 = nc
Could someone offer the proper pin info?
Thanks in advance
Dee

TFT450
(COMPAQ TFT450) I have one of them and would like you to help me with two questions:
since we get out the backlight, there is no need of such power (12v, 2A / 5V, 2.5A) the most of power is used to power on lights.
So I think, 12V/ 0.5A// 5V/0.5A would be suficent for a propper funtionality of the lcd. it is 8W (stand by)power suply instead of 36W original power suply. Is it correct?
I heard that there is a FFC that needs to be extended. what conectors are deeded? what tipe of FFC do I need?
thanks.

Hi,
I bought a Compaq TFT450 without power supply and been searching everywhere for the power supply with no luck.
My USB/Firewire DVD writer enclosure uses the same type of PS/2 power supply as the Compaq TFT450 and was wondering if that would work. The power supplies input is 100-240VAC,50/60Hz and its ouput is 12V 2A and 5V 2A.
Would this work fine with the Compaq TFT450 or would I be risking it?
Regards

this will probably have too little power for the compaq, most tft's draw 3+ Amps, and can be powered with 2.5 at a pinch, but 2 wil probably not work it. However it wouldnt break it (its not gonna fry anything if its too little, only if its too much) so its worth a try
L-shaped connector
I don't know if anyone is even reading these posts now, but I successfully put together a projector using a TFT5000. The problems I'm having are:
1) the circuit board that is folded under the screen (I believe this is the one that everyone refers to lengthing the FFC cable on) and
2) the L-shaped connector that connects the big main circuit board (where the power and signal come from) to the LCD (the board that's folded under).
I'm trying to build a box to put the whole thing in, and I want to attach the board to the box, but the L-shaped connector isn't long enough for me to "fold" the board down. This is my MAIN problem.
Does anyone know the official name for that connector, or where I might order one? It's kind of a grey ribbon with connection terminals on each end of it, same side.
