Wow. An entire thread over using the "Search" function!

Remember that newbies might not have much experience with either message boards or chat rooms, and there is a level of apprehension in posting the first message or two.

Coming onto a new forum is a little like entering a place of business, and asking to be directed to Jones' office. The person there can either say, "Jones' office is one flight up the stairs, and there is a company directory on each floor if you want to see anyone else", OR they can say, "There is a company directory on each floor, why the heck didn't you consult that instead of wasting my time asking for Jones' office??!!!"

Which answer would you like to encounter?

So, how do you deal those who flatly refuse to read the company directory and just keep asking the same question over and over again with minor variations? Or those who, having convinced themselves Jones is on the ninth floor, then proceed to get very angry with those who, having bothered to read the company directory, suggest that it would be better to look on the fifteenth floor?

Unlike a company office, nobody is paying or being paid to be here.
So what are we here for, to be as miserable as possible?

Then let them go up to the ninth floor and keep looking. You've shown them the company directory, after that you're not responsible for the results. 🙂

Actually, if a member gets angry or accusatory, that is another thing. What I am talking about is a new member who asks a few basic questions, even though those questions could be found in a search.

My only advice is to answer the first question, then politely mention that he can use the search function for the remainder.

If the guy keeps doing it and doing it, despite your advice, that is a different story. I don't believe that is what ROVSING was talking about.
