I have a Njoe Tjoeb modded Marantz cd4000, Always used either through headphone output or RCA out to amplifier.
Just bought a Hifiman ef499 and wanting to use digital output via coaxial cable.
I have plugged cable in both ends, selected Coax on the ef499, but no sound.
Checked ef499 with digital input from phone and PC and they work fine.
Is there a switch I need to set on the cd4000 to activate digital output?

A service manual with schematics is available at: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/2256356/Marantz-Cd4000-N1b.html
Don't know what "Njoe Tjoeb modded" entails though. Is the SPDIF output part of that? Or was it a feature of the original unit? If its part of a mod, then do you have a schematic for the mod? If not, can you reverse engineer one?
Also, do you have an oscilloscope?

Thank you for your replies @huggygood and the schematics.
Any idea what T1 sets. It appears to be a potentiometer in line with the digital output?

Pot on digital output might adjust signal level, transformer ringing, and or coax cable impedance matching.
@finchdoc - Sorry, I deleted a post asking a question you've already answered. Have you tried the ES499 with any other digital source via Coax? You say above "digital input from phone and PC". How were they connected? USB for phone (I assume)... Some PC sound cards had Coax out...
@ItsAllInMyHead - yes I used an old DVD bluray player with coaxial output which worked fine.
If there is no solution to the CD4000 output, I may just have to use a cheap and cheerful transport, as the DAC in the EF499 is superb
