I don't really understand your question, especially since your 2015 creation seemed to work perfectly. So why not continue in the same direction and use the connections on the board rather than powering it via usb?
Anyway, no, this is the first time I hear about the problem you encountered. Also, maybe the problem is that when using usb cables, the tone board seeing no digital data coming in, switches off. You should try using usb cables without data transfer cables but it still seems strange.
For my part, I finally use E30 dacs in output and a D10s upstream of the nanodigi. It's not the most integrated solution but it works very well. And then, the day I choose another solution, I could always resell the dacs or use them for other systems.
But really I found your solution very elegant and was on the verge of making an equivalent with Khadas Tone 2 diy boards because I would have preferred balanced connections. But since they never came out, I had to settle for another solution.
