Solder pot. The really cheap ones on Ebay need a rework of the triac used to control temperature and will fail after a short while. The one step more expensive ones from China work a lot better and longer.
Tried the torch on my braided leads but it got really messy-black, have now ordered a $25 solder pot from amazon.

The easiest solution is to buy Beldsol or the equivalent insulation so you can just solder through it at a moderately high temp.
Easiest is a razor blade knife. Scrape length as you rotate the wire.

This is exactly what I do as well, works great. Scraping first seems to prevent too much enamel junk building up on the iron and the iron has a much easier job of melting off the remains.Then a solder pot or hot iron is how I do it.
