I just replaced the entire laser assembly in a Rotel 971, it took care of the audio problems I was having but it now wants to skip forward. Watching the mechanism operate it seems the mechanism is hanging back, then when there is sufficient torque built up it advances too far and skips forward. Am I making sense, and if so, will this problem eventually resolve itself as it breaks in?
If not I could either get another new assembly or install the new head in the old mechanism.
Any informed opinions are greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

I fooled around with it more, checked the eye pattern, OK.
Opened the drawer and powered down, then turned the gears by hand. I could easily feel the gears were catching so I pulled the mechanism and carefully flushed out all the gears and the rack teeth, relubed and reassembled it. It is now tracking perfectly through every CD so far, and sounds fine. There was a bit of grit on the rag I flushed it out over, so heads up to anyone doing this repair, clean it first.
