Cleaning dust from old amp - advice please.

Ahhhhhh - yes. Magic dust that lurks deep within the secret places of the audio equipment is a close relative of the magic smoke constrained within electronic components. Dirt and grime can absolutely degrade the operation of electronic equipment - knowledge I gained when I was a repair and calibration technician. Circuit degradation due to this type of contamination is more often observed in circuits that are sensitive to very low voltage levels (front end of RF stages for example - or of high end electronics measurement gear). Some circuits are sensitive to changes in capacitance - again usually in the front end of high gain amplifiers - and is one reason why the component layout and circuit board tracks can be critical in high performance electronics gear. This part is all true.

I've been considering designing a line of products that are sealed and inside is air exhaled by virgin Tibetan Yaks from high up in the Himalayas. I'm not saying which end of the Yak that the air comes from tho........

If those guys that attended BAF don't start posting some photo's soon I'll be getting into more trouble on this and other threads. Boredom is a spoiled child's worst situation...

Now that would be a great selling line of gear! One suggestion: save a bundle by not having to go to Tibet for Yak air and use Wall Street BS air!! It's free, plentiful and you know which end it came out from 🙂

Y'know I'm not saying that GFA 5800 is a 'good' amp - just that it does sound better after that total clean. I know a wasp fart can blow some RF circuitry sideways but the Adcom must've collected King Kong's first dump of the day - possibly pure capacitance gel? Although it would run to earth maybe there could have been a constant flow of low level static elektrickery on the 'interconnects' - and isn't that what they are in there - short ones, but still interconnects.

Confused and speculative right now, but happy anyway !!

.... or the natural result of not being brain dead 🙂

Stay well, and best to you and all, Mike.

Mike.

Papa Pass might be able to share some insight with you - although he is pretty busy now day's playing with his newer designs.

Adcom GFA-5800 - 250 WPC. Brand New, In-The-Box, Never Used! A Classic! Both Amps Have SOLD!
