Looks like I made back to 'square 1' concerning this project.
I'll finish rebuilding the PS back to spec w/ high grade components. Perhaps try some Russian Teflons as bypass caps. I think my problem is noise in the system.
In the phono and line stages, I agree there is the risk of upsetting the balance, but there is something to be said for eliminating the output bypass caps with new high grade signal caps, especially since this model has the rep for being euphonic. The problem is choosing the right ones.

You need to experiment and figure out what works in your circuit to make it sound the way you want it to. This is the "beauty" of this hobby. If you think the amp is euphonic then Teflon-type caps will steer you towards a more neutral sound. Just suck-it and see if you like it.
I agree. Part of the fun for is also doing research and seeking other's opinions. Not afraid to take the plunge on buying a few caps, but don't see the need to make an uninformed decision.
The total and complete lack of B+ decoupling scares me. Yeah, it works, but this can't remotely be optimum. FWIW.
Thanks,
Chris
Thanks,

the resistors r26 and r57 the grid stop on the input of the line stage and the output res. after the fine cap on the line stage is a great place to part swap. Back in the early 80s I worked for a CJ dealer and sold a number of those per-amps . The res. do not cost a lot for 4 fine res. The cap could set you back 100s of dollars.
Batsong, it's a year later, how did things turn out? I'm on the same path with my PV-5. What all did you do in the power supply? I want to start out with a fresh set of good tubes and an up-to-snuff power supply...
