Like-minded folk:
Short reply please on MTM/TL speakers and simple world-beating preamp. (Or long reply is good too!).
I have a wheels-up clean Citation II, a digital iron, an area old school jedi electronics tech, and propensity for unusual forays into consumer debt. Plan A is to resurrect the CII ala McShane++, build some speakers, build/get the simplest/cleanest imaginable preamp, and begin (1) comparing Kempf, Richter, Brendel, etc. on Beethoven sonatas and (2) going at Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett in a chronological order. Bucket list items all.
My ears are tender (and O’Conor’s Hamburg Steinway on Telarc is carnivorous), so I want to avoid harsh. I cannot stand pornographic/undefined/indiscrete bass so I’ll be the anti-sub guy in the conversation. Scott LaFaro’s 1825 Prescott string bass must not become the least bit steroidal. I will be happy with surgical sterility through the chain (CII is apparently a good start).
Speakers:
I will likely be buying/building new speakers (don’t want uncertainty of provenance). I would rather build a kit of very top spec. Want to do thick Zalytron cabinets. Thor is as appealing as CII on paper – why not? But Olin might satisfy with less heft. In any case, I’ve made it easy with an MTM only edict. Will select top-spec crossover components and will lean toward mods which quell the oft-mentioned “out-front midrange” and sibilance and/or which otherwise lower the listener fatigue factor. I record vocals and professional musicians using a Neumann 87 so I’ll be using this system as production monitors too.
Preamp:
Want ultra-short signal path – one old huge ugly WWII era Bakelite volume knob would be perfect. Would prefer it to, as a function of its design or by modification, be attenuated such that it not be able to saturate or clip the CII. Would prefer an older, eternally repairable design.
When I’m done, I will be glad to host anyone interested for a listening session – you can even cry and moan about how boring and sterile it is – I’ll pour you a killer pilsner to help you get over it.
I wish black background peace for you and your families.
