Chromecast Audio plus Class D amp, how to power them?

How did you wire it? And where did you put those capacitators (which ones) for what reason?

Hi barrymossel, I soldered the DC-DC converter, inductor and capacitor to a small piece of stripboard. I took the 12V DC in from my power supply and 5V DC out to a female USB socket, the used a short USB lead to the Chromecast Audio. I can take a photo of the converter arrangement tonight if you like?

For the 12V to 5v converter (MEV3S1205SC) the datasheet suggests a 10μH inductor (11R103C) and a 4.7μF ceramic capacitor.

The capacitor and inductor are for output ripple reduction.

Its all described at the top of page 4 of the datasheet.

Hope this helps.

No problem, I'll do that this evening. It the meantime here's a link to my project page 😉

Grazor's Homepage

As I use a 4S LiPo I had to look for another converter. I hope this one will be sufficient: TMR 3-1211-HI | TRACOPOWER Isolated DC-DC Converter, Vin 9 → 18 V dc, Vout 5V dc, I/O isolation 3000V dc | TRACOPOWER
  • 9-18V input
  • 5V output
  • 3000V isolation
The data sheet doesn't mention an output ripple filter, so I guess no caps needed on the output?
It does mention an input filter though. How important is that? Or is that for specific uses only (they talk about some standards etc.).

Here is the DC to DC converter with its inductor an capacitor.

Thanks! If you could do that, please!

Sorry to dig up on old thread but I am doing exactly this!

I'm a bit confused over the wiring of the capacitor and inductor. If I've read the data sheet correctly, for output ripple reduction (page 6), the capacitor should bridge the V+ out and V- out (pins 5 and 7), but from your image it "looks like" you have done this with the inductor. I don't suppose you have a pic of the underside?

I've tried running without the ripple reduction but I don't think the CCA likes it and keeps rebooting.

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the late reply, I was away on holiday last week. Does this help?

Hi Graham,
No worries, thank you for replying. That helps a lot thanks. I was about to return mine but I'll give it another shot.
Did you get your capacitor from RS too? Do you mind me asking which one. The only one I can find has to be bought in a pack of 10.

Hi Mike, Sorry I can't remember where I got the capacitors from. I checked my purchase history for RS and Farnells but neither go back far enough to show the capacitor purchase. I seem to remember having to purchase a pack of 10. I'll have a look in my parts bin tonight and see if I can get a part number of the capacitors I bought.

regards, Graham.

Hi Mike, Sorry again for late reply. Yes that does look like the one. Here is the packaging for the ones I got.

I got the pack of 10. If you haven't bought them yet PM me your address and I'll stick a couple in the post to you.

Cheers,
Graham.
