Choosing home audio woofer for car?

Hey guys, i really need help here, i need to replace my mercedes W202 front door speakers, and there are no good component speaker kits in my country apparently...
I was thinking of buying a woofer (or mid-bass? which one?) off europe-audio.com, but am having difficulty finding a good driver, i need a 6'' driver; i know i have to use a relatively high Qts value, but what else? what do i need more to find a good driver?

You'll have to set up an account to log in to see the 'Super Saver' price, but my money would be on either of these two

RS150P-4 - Dayton 6 inch Reference Paper Woofer 4 Ohm - Europe Audio
SB17NRXC35-4 - SB acoustics 6 inch midwoofer - Europe Audio

Not sure of the crossover set up in your Merc, or if they will blend well with the stock tweeters, but those are the drivers that i think you'll be happy with.

hahah curious, i had my eye on these two, but the SB17 seems to fall behind the dayton audio in terms of maximum frequency it can reproduce efficiently

From the reviews I've read, i would probably go for the SB's, as I get the impressive they can hit low. In practice once installed .... that's another matter. Don't put all your faith in specs and T/S parameters! At some point, your ears have to kick in and do some work 🙂

Its much for much. I would say: pull the trigger on one or the other, install and enjoy ... and stop worrying about 'maybe I should have bought the other set'

Yeah but in a leaky car door with stock car tweeters and subs in the trunk i don't really think i need a speaker (at least on the doors) that play that low, i just need something to merge an sound good with the stock tweeters and back speakers and what not

I should imagine that either would be better than the stock midbass speakers you have at the moment.

And if you can't be with the one you love honey
Love the one you're with
I know we want this and that, but for me, its a matter of picking a fairly half decent brand which for me being into SQ might be the likes of Morel, Hybrid Audio, Hertz, DLS (all of which i've owned) and enjoying them. Of course each brand has its own quality .... but what I refuse to do, is go mental, arguing and debating those differences. I'd rather buy from a reputable brand which has half decent SQ, and simply get on with it! As audio enthusiasts the flies never settle on us. We're always thinking; upgrade, the next thing, this reviews says ..... that thinking often gets expensive very quickly as we then start to move from one component to anther and never really finding the perfection which we're seeking.

There would be other considerations including Silver Flute (not on europe-audio)

Bottom line is; i would be happy to buy and try either ... becasue both are on my 'Buy & Try' list ... along with 375 other drivers!!!

Again getting it to merge will be down to the crossover set up, unless you're going active. I've merged all sorts of drivers for good or for bad Dayton, Morel, Vifa among some, but then I've got on with the reason I bought the components in the first place ... for the music, not the speakers! I love Morel, I love DLS, but i'd be more than happy with a pair of JBL speakers .. if that's all i had ... and I have had many JBL products, home and car audio.

i actually tried installing hertz coaxials, but their tweeter would just battle the dash tweeter so i got rid of them, guess i'll try them won't i, i think i'm going for the daytons? what do you think? will they play well until the tweeter kicks in?

can someone answer me another thing, can the tang band W5-1138SMF (W5-1138SMF - TB speakers 5 inch paper cone subwoofer - Europe Audio ) handle infinite baffle? what characteristics does a woofer need to work in infinite baffle?

For IB the formula is usually:

QTS - above 0.7
SD - bigger cone area the better
Xmax - a fair bit of stroke

Although you could use the Tang Band, I personally wouldn't. It has been suggested that the likes of the JBL-GTO 804 would do the job, but I know DLS do a nice IB/Free air sub

Performance OA8 - 8 inch open air subwoofer

If you're looking at a smaller cone, then look for a decent pair of 6x9's or 7x10's

but i need 5.25 inch subs to fit the w202 holes :/

Ho-hum, huff-puff .... then i guess its you're best option, but my expectations wouldn't be too high. I've owned the 8" Tang Band sub. Not the last word in fidelity but it'll do the job.

In the right set up, even the 5.25's can do some damage. IB ...not so sure

any way to know for sure how they will perform in my trunk? i mean.. i think they can use the trunk as a baffle and there will be two of them, will they really do that badly?

I'm sure they'll hit better than you're average 6x9's but i wouldn't expect them to do the duty of a decent sub. But in terms of midbass - midrange, anything much above 300-500 Hz i think the TB driver would struggle with. Nice to give a bit of kick, but certainly no rival to the Sundown X-12 sub.

Not even with two of these firing into the boot?

I just need them to give decent below 150ish Hz
