Guys,

Just received my Kicker Solobaric woofer and I finally had a chance to do some measurements in my car and the absolute most space I can get for my subwoofer is .31 cu ft for the sealed portion and .94 for the ported side of the enclosure.

I played around with the volumes on WinISD and looks like a .31 cu ft sealed and .40 ported, tuned to 75.97 Hz will yield the curve below. What do you think?

The box I am trying to build is going into a 1965 Shelby Cobra which has no roof and very little space. The engine is very loud so I am looking for a loud subwoofer that still sounds good.

PS. Where should my electronic lowpass cross-over be set to approx for this box?

I know it is far from an Ideal curve. But for my specific application I think it might be the best I can do. The car this box is going in has an extremely loud and very deep exhaust note (It's a V8 motor with 3 inch side pipes). I also have a very limited amount of space available and sealed and ported are both out because the box has to be placed in the trunk and ported into the passenger compartment.

I am just wondering if in my particular case. Again... small car, NO roof, VERY loud exhaust...can I expect reasonably good sound from this enclosure. I am not looking for accuracy hear but a nice loud system that has some impact to it. ???

If there is even a little tiny crack between the seats or between the boot / passenger area, you will do better on straight SUB bass than that with a straight ported box. I have seen installs that fired straight into the seatbacks even.

If there is even a very small gap between the seats and the back wall of the tub, that will be enough for a sub to breathe into. It might not look it, but the bass will find the way.

That curve would be perfect for a vehicle with a roof, as cabin gain would take care of the bottom end quite nicely. With a rag top it won't work quite as well but will prove adequate. You don't need to port it to the passenger compartment; in fact, with a rag top that's likely detrimental. Let the trunk serve as a compression chamber; the bass wil go right through the back seat.

I've just put a sub in my wifes car. It has a metal firewall between the rear seats and the trunk. Measurements suggest that the bass below 30hz gets through fine, but above that it needed eq to get the 30 - 110 stuff through... In this case the metal wall and back seat acted as a lowpass filter :-(

Its a hard top btw.

I would go for the porting into cabin area if there is a definite wall between the trunk and cabin (and you can cut holes for the ports), otherwise go sealed or ported to taste.

Maybe try a rough sealed box and see whether there are enough 'leaks' to get the bass through before building the more complex bandpass...

I'm thinking about putting an 8" sub into the glovebox to get more bass inside the car , and crossing it to the sub in the trunk at 30hz.....

Considering the driver you're using, I'd go with a small sealed box. The Solobarics are designed for that application. Try a 1 cubic foot box and see how you like it. At worst, you're out $20 in wood.

How much power are you using?

Thanks for all the responses guys.

The reason I have to go bandpass is because the trunk and passenger compartment of this vehicle are Completely seperate. If I put a box in the trunk I'll get zero sound in the car (besides a rattling trunk sound).

I ended up building the box over the weekend. I tested it in an alternate vehicle that already has a system and it sounds pretty darn good.

I'll post some pics as soon as I get a chance!
