cheapest output transformer for a SE EL84 guitar

Hi all,

I need the cheapest output transformer for a SE EL84 guitar amplifier, not Hi-Fi or even Low-Fi. I have searched but the cheapest I could find was the Hammond for 39$...

Maybe someone can beat that figure? Just post a link and brand name so I can look further.

Side of the road?

I've just picked up 2 old 60's valve stereo - radios off the side of the road in the last week...... they're going to end up as guitar amps - that's the cheapest way to get transformers!!!
(mind you, I've been looking out for such items for about 3 years with no luck; now I have 3 of them LOL)

I have quite a few single EL84 OPTs... a particularily nice ferrograph one...

Hehe I managed to get 2 identical ferrograph reel to reels for $30, sold the 4 Mullard EL84s on eBay for $60, kept the 4 mullard ECC83 and EF86, and use the transformers and chokes in a SET amp!

Damn old stuff can be useful!!! 😀 😀

And I have got great sounding guitar trannies out of crappy old tube radios that no-one wants... Bigger is better, generally small trannies don't distort very nicely.

Anything decent? If you have some big PP trannies in them, might be worth rebuilding for hi-fi...

I really appriciate it. The output transformer seems the most expensive, but 9$ is a big improvement...good tip. I'm thinking about building a serie of 10 to resell them localy. This makes prive trades difficult, but the thanksfor the offers.

You were kidding about the 12-0-12/220 tranfer weren't you?

The postage on a mains trannie from the UK would be a lot cheaper to the Netherlands than from the US. Try Maplins:

They have a mains trannie suitable for your amp - code XP27E - which has a 240v secondary at 100ma and 6.3v at 1.5A. Cost £12.99 (€18.50).

I've tried using mains trannies as output trannies in amps before, but I'd only recommend it as an emergency replacement. Frequency response often leaves much to be desired and core saturation is always possible (although not a problem in a push-pull amp).

Yes, if Tschrama doesn't mind used components then he could try the junk shop at Past times Radio. They strip down old valve radio chassis of sets beyond repair and test and sell on the usuable stuff. Mains trannies from £6, and output trannies from £7.

316a, before butchering an old Dansette record player, did you see the Dansette radiogram on eBay last week that went for £101? I'd bought the same model about 10 years ago at a junk shop to strip for parts for £2!
