Cheap line array looking HT from Yamaha and company

2 cents worth ...
Because very small drivers can be low cost, I would 'splash out' and use at least 8 ( or more ) to approximate a true line-source situation.
PS.
Because your power handling would increase, you could then use some Bass control / EQ.

I always felt they were done like that with the white drivers against black cabs to draw attention as the higher range 'separates' run multiway systems in those brands

My concern is more about;

losing the point source benefit of the single FR driver
vs
eye-catching effect of multiple drivers
vs
any benefits from a 4 driver line array

Maybe 1.5 way for the diy. Dont know how this behaves with more than 2 drivers.
Thanks for the tip. I do have 4x 2.75" drivers on hand good for down to 300hz

True. That is the non compromise option if the line array is the desired end goal. My concern is more about the best use of a smaller number of FR drivers, like 2 to 4 per baffle and not degrading the performance of a single FR driver for imaging

Despite all the criticism of sound-bars, there have been a lot of improvement / R&D / competition in this horizontal format as an alternative to the L-C-R.

It it would be interesting to know what is done with a vertical column of full rangers, from the major manufacturers like Yamaha, Samsung, LG, Sony et. al

Our lil regional costal town only has JB Hi-fi and Harvey Norman stores, so the council reuse centre has a ton of identical systems from those brands going for AUD $1-5 per cab and a lot of drivers to be harvested. I might take out a bunch and place an ad in the swap meet for used drivers. I don't have that much use for them otherwise

Interesting you mention "sound-bars"
Thanks for bringing this up

I gather there is sound-bar style but also full room applications (?)
That would make for good discussion! I wonder about the merit of something like L-L-L-C-C-C-R-R-R in a bar and using the small FR drivers. Raising issues re different levels and DSP settings that would be applicable per driver

Re this, yesterday I saw eyeball shaped metal bodied satellites from KEF for $5 each. Couldn't tell if they were FR or coax

Sputnik was an eyeball shaped metal bodied satellite.
