Cheap and simple 4-channel power amp without DSP

Hi,

I don't have much experience building amplifiers, but I would really like to build a compact 4-channel power amp for active crossovers.
I would really like:

  • No built in DSP (clean simple signal path)
  • Proper connectors or screw connectors on the board(s) as opposed to JIT
  • Pop protection
  • Auto standby (or at least very low idle power draw)
  • At least two channels of 30-40 watts for bass duty (tweeter channels can be less)

I've looked a bit at the Sure AA-AB32231 for the tweeters channels and a TPA3255 board for the woofer channels.
Or just a 4-channel TPA3255 board (but hard to find one with proper connectors and not JIT)

Any recommendations and/or ideas?

Hi, was looking for similar thing some time ago and went with some ICEpower modules. They seemed to be cheapest reliable stuff with protection and other important utility circuitry, including power supplies with AUX power rails. No DSP, no nothing extra. I bought some 200as2 modules, but they have all kinds of modules to select from. I have some Sure JAB2 and 3 boards from perhaps 4 years ago, they have been working the whole time but are noisy and such, exactly as good as the cost.

Look for MA12070 solutions.

Thanks! How do they stack up against the TPA chip based amps I wonder?

They're really nice and convenient but unfortunately quite expensive to import into Norway all things considered (two modules plus cable sets).

Don't be put off by JIT.
You can buy the pre-made cables or just buy the pliers & connectors off Ebay.

Pretty much every module I've looked at with JIT connectors dont specify the types of connectors so I have no idea what to shop for..

On Ebay there are many sellers offering 4-channel TPA3255 amp boards, for example this one:

I am sure there are similar offerings for your country.

The heatsink area is small, so the PS voltage should probably be limited to 30V. This will still get you a clean 60W into 8R almost double that into 4R.

Seems like the same as AIYIMA B2D2205. For a newbie like me, the challenge with these boards is the lack of documentation. What JIT connectors do I need to look for? Does it have pop protection?

Hello,

I'm using a 4 channel amp based on this one (6 channels) described on the slowdier blog :

https://theslowdiyer.wordpress.com/2013/08/25/past-projects-6-channel-icepower50asx-amp/

On this thread a picture of the first version 2 channels, now it's upgraded to 4 channels to drive high and mids active 3 way :

Icepower 50ASX2 SE modules are very good sounding with a LME49710 buffer IMHO.

You get what you pay for. If you are lucky, the seller will include the headers with wire leads.

If you want something better, you should buy a commercial power amp for example from the Emotiva BasX line. Still cheap and not great, but you get a known quantity that you can always resell. Ebay is flooded wtih these, and for a good reason. But one of them would be a good first amp. Stick with 8 Ohm drivers and you will be fine.
