After successfully constructing the "Morgan Jones Tube Headphone Amp", I have decided to try to build the JE Labs Stereo 300BDX. However, I am having a difficult time trying to layout the chassis. I have tried some different layouts, and would appreciate your input as to which you think would be best.
Thanks,
Matt
I am not sure whether to mount the transformers on the edge of the chassis or leave an inch around the edge?
Thanks,
Matt
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I like the first option with an inch free around the edge.

They are James Transformers, aren't they?
The power transformers are only available with 110V primary, so they are not really suitable in NZ, unless you have a large stepdown transformer.
But those OPTs look very nice.... As long as you have enough money to spend on shipping fee.... 😱
Transformers
Yes, they are James transformers. I ended up buying them over ebay, as they were slightly cheaper than the Hammond transformers I could get here in Canada.

It only cost $25.00USD to ship it (although it took a few weeks). As long as you have enough money to spend on shipping fee
It is a bit unconventional, and you get the most advantage if you put the input & output close in the interests of minimum signal path, but if you can get the OPTs as far from the power trafo as you can, you reduce any potential for magnetic interferance

Are the input tubes sensitive to the magnetic field from the power transformer? If not, I could switch the OPT and the input tubes. That would get the OPT away from the power transformer.
At the present time I am leaning towards the first picture.

...and it costs 65 bucks to receive a pair via airmail...

The ones in eBay are more expensive than from asian audio comp. dealers...
How much did you pay for the pair? $125~160 ??
If you buy'em from a dealer in HK, they cost only about $95 or so....

$115.00 USD

What's the rush? I still had to get the rest of the parts, why ship airmail?

I tried e-mailing THL audio, but they never responded. Thus, why I went with ebay.

Ja, in the last picture you can see the Powerbook with a Sony Vaio on top of it.
Any further advice on the layout..
I think I will go with the first picture. However, I am not sure if I should mount the transformer on the very edge or an inch into the chassis?
Thanks,
Matt
Hi,
Nice looking iron! IMHO You might consider putting the caps under the chassis or since you have a lot of real-estate, switch to ASC oil caps. The ASC's polish up real nice 🙂

Danny
