I would greatly appreciate some guidance -
I am building a tube preamp from folded .063" aluminum sheet stock. I have not decided whether I'll use an attenuator or Alps/Noble-type potentiometer yet however.
I seem to recall that the typical black/blue Alps/Noble units are 1 1/2" (37mm) high. Is that dimension correct? What about some of the attenuator kits? What is their overall height?
I want to keep the outside dimension of the chassis to 2" (50mm) if at all possible but want to leave adequate clearance inside to fit a volume control.

Hi,
The ALPS blue is 27mm wide, not 37mm for detailed dimensions see http://www3.alps.co.jp/cgi-bin/WebObjects/catalog.woa/1/wo/hkVzDR59I26hhCoD7FYfF0/89.4.0.1.1.0
The black older ALPS is much bigger 40mm wide and 40mm high, for current production ALPS pots see http://www3.alps.co.jp/cgi-bin/WebO...e=english&country=com&top_mode=2003&product=4
Normal Noble pots are 18mm high
Goldpoint attenuators are 32.3mm high see here http://www.goldpt.com/dims.html
I prefer Goldpoint over DACT as Goldpoint use holemount type resistors of better quality than the surface mount resistors that DACT use.
As you see 50mm internal height or even somewhat less is enough for most pots and attenuators. My new preamp is 50mm high internally using a Goldpoint attenuator and ALPS pot for balance.
Regards Hans

Thank you very much Hans!
This was exactly the quality of information I needed.
