Changing Bass Drivers for Martin Logan ESL

Hi , got in a mood to experiment a little with my Martin Logan ESL 15 A speakers. I love the sound of electrostats and idea of using Built in Amplifier with DSP.
I'm experimenting with with swapping out existing 12inch woofers in favor of 11inch , decided to to work with Scan Speak ,

each speaker currently has 2X 12 inch woofers in 1cu/FT enclosuers sealed with 500W for each woofer at 4 ohm....

I'm having a hard time deciding how to mount 11" woofer in place of 12" , would probably need something fabricated but if you have any ideas let me know please.

as i said I'm experimenting now , to see if i can make bottom and more presice ,, not looking to add more bottom end but to make bass more defined , correct and fast,,,, woofers will play from bottom up to 300hz that s where the electostat panel takes over...
Ive heard good things about ScanSpeak woofers and always wanted to try ,,, worst case illput everything back to Stock and return the SS drivers or sell 🙂

1. Please help to confirm that 28W/4878T01 will work in 1cuFT sealed enclosure with some fill in it ( so ill have 2 woofers in each speakers )
2. Please help with some ideas on how to best mout speaker since original speakers is bit larger compared to new ne.
3. do not flame me if I'm doing something stupid , lol

Enjoy....

If you're thinking of spending this sort of money, it's worth having a measurement setup.

I'm almost certain that your complaint about the bass will be a peak in the response at the listening position, and something as simple as a band of EQ will improve things dramatically.

I agree with Chris to first check the frequency response.

Swapping woofers can reduce distortion or increase output capability. Is the system lacking in these areas? I would not swap woofers to change the frequency response, a DSP is a cheaper and more powerful tool.

I see the speakers support room correction. Has it been set correctly?

PoweredForce Forward bass technology combines two MartinLogan audio innovations: PoweredForce, which allows small enclosures to accurately produce massive amounts of bass, and ForceForward, which significantly reduces performance-robbing front-wall bass reflections.

PoweredForce Forward bass technology uses an advanced crossover topology with phase-timed woofers to minimize destructive reflected energy. By virtually eliminating front-wall bass reflections and working in tandem with the panel, PoweredForce Forward Bass Technology gives you more placement flexibility, and enhances the true audio realism of your sound source.
This suggests that the woofers are wired for cardioid bass. I would not touch such a system unless you have full control over the built in DSP and have access to a measurement microphone. The DSP might compensate for production tolerances in the existing woofers.

I did run ARC and it really made a bid difference, i know with DSP and EQ the is only so much you can do if your room is physically not aligning properly right?

As i sasid , I'm just playing around to see if things would change with new woofers , i guess I'm looking to increase speed of woofers and bottom end,

Did not know that crossovers would have to change with new woofer , i guess ill found out results the hard way since i allredy ordered 4 of them , now trying to figure out how to mount them in the opening ,,,

I love ML desin and it having a built in amplification and ability to DSP and manually increase base and subbaase,

i guess there must be a reason why i do not see people doing it or at least as an experiment , mabe it makes NO sense what so ever what I'm doing and if so ill go back to original drivers and return new ones..

I'm attaching screenshots collected ruing ARC setup using provided ARC microphone, thinking about getting myself UMIC 1 and working with REW

Yes It's a cardioid bass with the rear dsp time delayed, bot EQ by built in DSP !

Good luck as it's certainly ask to remove the dsp for a ne one with the EQ related to the speakers used ! I assume peaks from bass and mostly hard cone will be wasting all the effordt of the ESL ! Indeed You don't know if it's only a steep filter or a steep filter + a noth on the peaks due to cone break ups !

Have you purchased the Vovlo plug-in with its calibrated mic to try better set-up and/or played more with room tweaking and speaker placment ?

Great chance you waste more the design than everything else as the drivers in the Renaissance are working fromm 300 hz minimum !

I don't know if there is a high pass set-up in the rear panel but you can play a lot on the clarity and music readness by founding the best high pass cut-of !

You also can run a very good servo conrolled bass cabinet a la Velodyne DD serie like for the first and half octaves.

If I has such a marvlous speaker I will try first to tune the room and firstly the wall behind the speaker to make even more non reflective despite the cardioid bass loudspeaker built in !

Thank you all for your recommendations ,
I completely agree with what you are saying and recommending.
I’m not planing on messing with crossovers ...
I think part of the problem is that my room is too small for these speakers.
Did run ARC with included Mic and it really improved on bass response, also purchases isoacustic giga I and it further improved ,
Since I allegedly received scan speak drivers I’ll swap them to see what happens , from what I’m gathering here existing woofers have been already optimized so my chances of getting something positive over what’s already is there are slim. I guess I need to feed my curiosity and see what happens myself , after owning ESL I don’t think I’ll be able to go back to traditional speaker designs , had Focal Supra 2 prior to these and there is no just no comparison how ESL plays music I guess that applies to all quads and Maggie’s a like , I’ll report back once swap has been completed, thank you all
