they weren't joking about this sort of thing -
closer to being 'legal' ...
These are not your run-of-the-mill potheads jammed into the long, narrow classroom at Oaksterdam University, a tiny campus with no sign to betray its location on busy San Vicente Boulevard south of the Beverly Center. A serious vibe fills the loftlike space, where rows of desks are arranged like church pews under exposed ducts. No one clowns around or even smiles much. Instead, eyes fix intently on a screen at the front of the darkened room.

I heard an ad on the radio the other day for a clinic in Sacramento offering relief from glaucoma, side effects of chemotherapy, etc. The name of the clinic made it clear what they were offering. First time I'd heard pot advertised over the air. Times have changed indeed!

Indeed they have. As many of you would know, Vancouver has been big in the cultivation of indoor pot for quite some time. (and no, it's not hydroponic, it's all grown in dirt) Hundreds of these 'grow-ops' get busted every year but that does little to deter it. The big problem we face here is that after growing in a house for a year or two the house is sold to unsuspecting buyers who soon discover mold problems. Turns out it's a real health issue (big surprise huh?). Many of these home have to be gutted right down to the studs and redone as spraying a little bleach around doesn't cut it. It's a sad reflection of how the legality of it is handled even in liberal Vancouver.
Personally I am not in favour of it being legalized but would happily sign my name on a poll to have the possession of it decriminalized. Unfortunately that doesn't help those stuck with these huge bills to have there houses torn apart.
Another thing it's done is to turn Vancouver from a sleepy west coast city into a drug lord infested place where, when you hear about another couple of murders, you barely bat an eyelash. Most everyone I know either knows someone or a friend or family member of someone who has paid the price.
