Dj,

No, you can't:
2SC2690A: NF/HF-L, 160/160V, 1,2A, 20W, 155MHz
MJE340: NF-L, -/300V, 0,5A, 20W, >10MHz
The current rating for the MJE isn't high enough.
Same with the complementary parts 2SA1220A/MJE350

Possible replacements:
2SC2690A: 2SC3117, 2SD669, 2SD1563A
2SA1220A: 2SA1249, 2SB649

2SC1815: BC174, BC182, BC190, BC546, 2SD767
2SA1015: BC212, BC257, BC307, BC557
I didn't check the pin-outs. So measure first!

MPS8xxx is ok too, but certainly different pin-outs

I am sure that some of the more experienced people here would agree but I think there is a reason why they exploded. You see, usually transistors don't explode (or at least I have limited experience with exploding transistors). Maybe you should think about why everything is exploding for you? Very often an exploding amp is an indication of a problem of some sort.

DJ,

You must be careful when you are building or modyfying
electronic equipment. First, you can end up with much more
than a few transistors destroyed. Second, and more seriously,
you can hurt yourself!! Believe me, I have also experienced
exploding transistors, exploding op amps etc. when I was
yound and didn't know quite was I was doing. A component
that explodes can destroy an eye if you are unlucky. Electrolytic
capacitors that explode are also very nasty. Fortunately I have
not experienced that, but other have if you search the forum.

I have done that (please don't check the Electric shock thread). I cleaned up the mist and goo off the workshop but mum still screamed when I came back into the house. I looked like a spotted owl with black spots all over my face from the electrolyte. Big bad.

If the originals are not on a heat sink this will work.
The pin-out is different:
2SC2690A: ECB
2SC3298/2SC2344: BCE

To DJ: If you can only get few transistors where you live, that's sad, but the shop that sold you the big transistors should help you out with what he's got. Simply because we cannot know what he has...you see.

The replacements you list will probably work, but if you read post
#10 you will see the flare in DJ's amp.:cannotbe:

So DJ must replace transistors, this time he will not build a new amp. :devilr:

This means the replacements must fit mechanically and I don't know if your substitutes will do. You can't turn around a TO220 on a heatsink without a lot of hassle, and DJ already has trouble enough. 😉
I also think that he doesn't have much choice in buying what he would like to buy.
