Cerwin-vega JE36 junior earthquake bins

I have just purchased some unloaded Cerwin-vega JE36 junior earthquake bins. I already have some B36 and SL36 cabinets and made an assumption that a standard 18" driver such as PD1850 or Fane 18XB would fit the enclosure. However it seems I was wrong! The JE36 has less room inside the cabinet and the Fane 18XB is too deep by about 20mm. Does anyone have an idea of a suitable replacement for the original Cerwin-Vega driver, which is likely to be VERY expensive here in the UK.

many thanks and waiting hopefully!!

it is not wise to just go throwing any old driver into any old box, just cause it fits. find a way to get the CV drivers, they will most likely give you the best performance per dollar in those cabinets.

if youre REALLY stupporn though, look around for drivers you have acess to that have similar t/s parameters to the original CV drivers.

Hi Johan,

I may increase the size of the front chamber slightly if I can't get CV drivers, to accomodate a deeper driver. This shouldn't affect the front loading of the speaker but will mean that the driver will be a slightly larger enclosure. I am no expert and really don't have much idea of what could happen. The cabinets are only used up to 80Hz. If I can't get CV drivers I will have no choice!

Steve

Up to 80hz?

One of those per side won't go below 80hz no matter what driver you load them with. They will act like a small sealed box with a big woofer in them, IOW they will roll off below 80hz.

The 36" deep versions are much better, and must be used in blocks of four (minimum) if you expect any bass.

Cart them to the landfill.

YMMV

Well the others I have, including the old B36s certainly go well below 80Hz. I do have some SL36s which are the 36" deep cabinets, and yes they are better. In the ideal world and given shed loads of money, I wouldn't choose JE36s, but they were very cheap. Perhaps it was a mistake to buy them, but I do not pretend to be an expert in the field of loudspeaker science. I would just like to get something out of them if possible. I am pretty sure Cerwin-vega would disagree with your comments about them being not much use below 80Hz, more like 60Hz I would say. We do have some basic sound measuring equipment, which includes a B&K microphone plus charge amplifier, and an old HP3562 signal analyser.

Anyway thanks for the advice on taking them to the tip, although its not particularily useful!!

regards,

Steve

I assume you mean increasing the rearchamber? As in increasing the baffle thickness into the frontchamber?

A horn is more sensitive for changes in the beginning of the horn than changes at the end. In that way it's better to remove and/or replace the cabinet material behind the speaker. For instance aluminum which gives greather strength for lesser thickness and is less thermally isolating the speaker.

According to size(s) and fold style I would aspect usable output down to 60 Hz depending on driver, never measured one tho.
You could even make an extension that will drag the frequency down to the usable highpass for the 36" version.
However a 18" with a 3" VC and just 500 W program as used, is not likely to be a competitive contender for the modern designed speakers.

I've seen few other cabinets that have such "like or do-not-like issue".

Btw. the PD 1850 is not a normal sized 18":

Hi Johan,

Thanks for getting back. Yes it was the area behind the driver that I would enlarge to accomodate the deeper driver. It needs to be increased by about 20mm to get a 18XB driver in. I fully agree with your comments and the 60Hz bottom end. My crossover frequency is set at 100Hz not 80Hz as my previous mailing had stated. The best I can do is give it a try, or even try using a 15" driver with an adapter baffle?? It may work and I have several different 15" units lying around. As I mentioned before, I just want to get some use out of them and appreciate that they cannot compete with Martin WSX bins or similar. I will let you know how I get on. My wife is off to see her mother and taking the kids for the weekend so I can get out in the workshop and have a play!

kind regards,

Steve
