Center Speaker with tb w3-871s

I am currently building a set of rear speakers using the TangBand w3-871s units and I am amazed by these units!

Now I also want a center channel to complete my surround sound and I'd like to use these units for it.

Do you think this is a good idea? And do you perhaps have some advice on the enclosure? I don't suppose a center speaker has to work below 120Hz so a closed box could do the job..
And are 2 units better then 1?

Thanks for any help on this.. I am kind of new to this (and from the Netherlands, so excuse me for my English 😉)

I finished a similar center channel a couple months ago, and I am absolutely ecstatic with the results. I used two of the 3" TB's with the neodymium magnets, so they have a much smaller mass in the back of the driver, so you can put them in a smaller enclosure. I just wired them in series in a tiny 1/4 inch MDF (kind of an MDF pressboard/masonite, actually. Got it at Home Depot). They are both running full range down to the level of the receiver's high pass crossover. They are not completely broken in yet, but I completely love them. Vocals sound natural and deeper male vocals come across totally realistic and with no hint of thinness. They blend in perfectly (beleive it or not) with my Vifa fronts that have a 6 1/2 and a dome tweeter.

I cannot recommend this setup enough, even if you have larger fronts. It blends so well.

These are the w3-881s I presume?

I also have VERY large front speakers, a set of Infinity Delta 60 with 2x 8"

Thanks for the feedback!

Idealy you'd want your center speaker to go as low as your main speakers. But then again, idealy you'd want your rear speakers to go as low as your main speakers as well... If you've got a sub the W3-871S would go low enough to merge with them. If you like them for your rears build an identical setup for your center. What did you use for your rear channels? I'd say a sealed enclosure would do just fine. Using another W3-871S, you'd probably use it in a 1.5 way, would just extend the bass slightly. Hope that helps.

Yeah that really helps 🙂
It's a confirmation of what I already thought myself 😉

About that 1.5 system.. I found the construction schemes on this forum, but wasn't able to find anything about the filter to use in it! What is a normal frequency to filter the .5 speaker at?

I would seriously consider trying it with no filter on either speaker, just run them both full range. I don't think the expected effects of this are audible enough to notice, and I LOVE the sound of mine. My friend brought over the center speaker from an Energy Take 5.2 system, which is exactly the same shape and size as mine, and mine sounded much more natural and went lower and blended with the sub better than his 2-way Energy. Please at least try it.

I agree that no filter would be the best filter, but in that case you can use just one driver. Two drivers would just give you added SPL abilities, and it would also bring in a whole slew of problems (even if The Paulinator says he doesn't hear them, I wouldn't feel right doing that myself, although if you want might as well give it a try). Two drivers won't go slower than one, try with a single driver, it'll be the cheapest and easiest route to begin with.

I know that with 2 drivers you might get phase-problems under an angle, but since my front speakers have a sensitivity of 90dB and these fellows are only 86 or 87 dB the gain in SPL would be welcome 😉

This doesn't mean that I will not try a single driver. But when ordering they'll have to come from Canada to the Netherlands, so in total costs it won't make that much of a difference for me since the shipping is really expensive.

love the center

I just finished my center channel using the w3-881's last night. Mine has 4 drivers wired in series parallel. I loved it from the second it was hooked up. I agree that voices are very clear.

I am curious to find out if y'all think it would be good to port the box. I originally planned to port the box, based on the recommendation of winisd, but I'm not sure whether I should mess with a good thing.

Thanks in advance,

Austin
