Celestion DL8 Series 2 - Restore

I just got a pair of Celestion DL8 Series 2 from Ebay, haven't collected them yet but they look in rather good condition and have been used with a Rotel amp until recently.

I'm keen to make them truly sing again and would love to do some DIY on the crossovers and replace and internal foam etc...

Can someone provide me with an online tutorial on updating and repairing such a crossover etc...

I was guessing the internal wiring would be old copper and could be replaced for some new high quality silver plated wire etc?

Thoughts, tips and advice please???

Hi,

The single pair of terminals should be fine. Any electrolytics
in the treble signal path should be upgraded to film types.
Fancy wire, capacitors and wadding is not needed.

It's a small world. I'm just a few miles away from you in Burchetts Green and am about to refurbish the crossover in my DL8s. I bought mine new at the tender age of 16 in 1989 (after a few weeks of picking tomatoes to get the cash together) but I haven't used them for about 4 years. I was using them with a Musical Fidelity Tempest but I am awaiting delivery of a Quad 405-2 which I will be modernising (caps, op amps, phono inputs, speaker output "posts").

One of my speakers sounds a bit quieter than the other. I haven't done much diagnosis yet but I am sure it's the speaker (have ruled out amp, cabling, source etc). I'm also not sure if it's a driver or the crossover. It *seems* to be quieter from both the tweeter and the woofer (need to use a sound meter to test properly) so I pulled the crossover out this evening. The caps look OK (no leaks I can see) but I'm a bit confused. There are 3 electrolytic caps, one marked 4MF and 2 marked 6MF - I took this to mean 4 microfarads and 6 microfarads, but they're quite large for such a small capacitance.

I was rushing a bit, so I need to have another look when I have a bit more time, but if you pull your crossover out I'd be interested to hear what you find? I did a quick google and (apart from this thread) found a guy who was talking about 4 caps in the DL8, with completely different values to above?

Could caps be the cause of volume issues? The resistors are pretty chunky and look OK, but I haven't tested them. Same with the coils.

Thanks

Olly.

replace all electrolytic caps, upgrade the terminals if they need it, solder any crimp connections, anything else is unnecessary
Replacing electrolytics: I would say so, but in signal path. If there are some electrolytics in parallel with the drivers, replacing them can have negative effect - with MKP you will get more rifined sound, but it could be dry. It depends on drivers, response, crossover, cabinet. In some speakers it works fine, in other not. So, a bit carefully with it.

Replacing terminals and resoldering is a good idea.

Another good idea is to take measurements with microphone, what speakers perform now. The graphs will give you directions where to go first.

The last step is playing with caps: matter of taste. It is fine-tuning 😉
