Hi guys
My Dad's beloved CELESTION DITTON 250 speakers have blown a tweeter - open circuit.
(Photos attached...)
As I'm not familiar at all with delicate tweeter internals, I have resisted the temptation to open up the damaged unit and attack with the soldering iron.
I probably need to do both speaker tweeters - whilst it still works okay, the good one looks pretty ratty too - so I want to renew the tweeters on both speakers.
So, I'm looking for a drop-in replacement for a pair of Celestion HF1003 tweeters. They appear to be very hard to get for sane prices, these days.
I'm hoping someone can help with: -
Incidentally, Can anyone confirm what the "P" designation refers to on the rear of the tweeter below?
(I have seen similar HF1003 tweeters with a "D" designation, also...)
Appreciate all your help.

An old thread in this forum (Ditton Celestion 250 - Is it worth fixing it?) claimed that a KEF T27 worked perfectly as a substitute.
Falcon T27 replacements are available, but expensive. Details below:
KEF T27 REPLACEMENT FALCON F T27 8 ohm. MATCHED PAIRS.
P.S. Could The 'P' just be a quality control sign off?

CELESTION DITTON 250: HF1003 Tweeter Repair...
Galu
Many thanks for your prompt reply. Appreciated.
I saw this thread, but I believe that this member is seeking different tweeters from those that I require for the DITTON 250.
I have attached some more photos of the CELESTION HF1003 tweeters that I need to repair/replace and how they need to be mounted.
I'm not sure the FALCON models previously recommended will fit the need here... Plus the steep price becomes prohibitive.

As you have discovered, there is a paucity of information on the HF1003 tweeters.
It appears that you have nothing to lose by attempting to repair the o/c tweeter.
It is possible that one of the pair of lead in wires has broken just short of where it enters the voice coil. If so, this may be an easy fix.

Many tweeters have three hole fixings and can be separated from their faceplates in the same way as the HF1003.
Read the description of this Morel tweeter for example.
Morel Classic CAT298 Diameter 104mm
If all three hole fixings have the same dimensions (anyone know?), then this could help narrow down a potential replacement.
Doesn't solve the problem of not knowing the HF1003 specifications though!

You can sometimes unwind a tweeter a turn at the voicecoil, epoxy it down and rewire. I happen to have some 94mm mounting Morel CAT298 aka MDT29. They also come with a 104mm plate.
Has those very small electrical tags.
It's an 89-90dB 28mm tweeter. The flat aluminium mounting plate has a 34mm hole, which it needs because the voicecoil leadouts stick out a bit.
The three screws that hold the magnet to the mounting plate are on a PCD around 62mm. Which matters if you want to use the Celestion mounting plate. The cutout is apparently 72mm, but that is not an issue since you can always do some woodwork to get it to fit. The three mounting screws to the baffle are 86mm on the 94mm version. Different on the 104mm version.
Well, that's one option. Monacor and SEAS do lots too. Level is easy enough to adjust if it sounds a bit hot. You use cheap wirewound resistors.

I'm not sure what this speaker is. A three way with 6 or 8" bass? I'd be looking at the crossover to see how easy level adjust will be. For sure you don't need some worn out old tweeters off eBay. Get new ones!

Hi Steve!
Are you saying that the pitch circle diameter (PCD) is different for different three hole mounting tweeters? (The mounting holes on the tweeter body that is, not those on the removeable faceplate.)
Or is 62mm the standard PCD for the bolts which hold the tweeter assembly to the faceplate?

I don't think there is any standard at all on these things. Not in baffle mounting or magnet to faceplate mounting:
DT 94 - 8 Ohm | Visaton
That Visaton DT94, which again I own is completely different. I don't even know if that one can be run on another faceplate. The big SEAS do come apart, since you can buy new voicecoils for them and Morel.
H1212-06 27TBFC/G
Presumably you can redrill the Celestion plate to fit. Or mount a new tweeter direct on the Celestion baffle. It's just woodwork.

Thanks Steve.
The reason I asked is that I think SONDEKNZ wants to keep the original look by retaining the Celestion faceplates - and probably doesn't want to drill extra magnet mounting holes into them.
Looks like the mounting plate isn't even rebated:
You could fit almost anything there. Bit of black indelible marker would see off any cosmetic issues. I think New Zealand is a tough place to get hold of stuff, but almost any 8 ohm tweeter ought to do. But almost certainly you'd need to adjust level. Even 1dB wrong is very audible. Which usually corresponds to an ohm at the filter input.

Mounting a small tweeter (like the Visaton DT94 which Steve mentioned) onto the Celestion faceplate sounds a good option in cosmetic terms. Would just need some enlargement of the faceplate opening - easy enough if it's made of plastic.
BOUGHT A MINT PAIR OF ORIGINAL TWEETERS - USED!
Guys
I want to thank you for all of your suggestions and support.
I've actually managed to buy a mint used pair of new (exact original) tweeters, so I'm away laughing.
These are seriously good sounding speakers as they are, so I can't wait to refresh the crossovers and bring them into the 21st century.
I'll start a new thread on that project, for sure.
Many thanks again.
