Celestion 66 & 662 crossover question

Bought my Celestion 66s new in 1975 & 662s in around 1980, recently BOTH started to sound a bit 'dull', from this excellent forum I realised that they probably required re-capping.
So, 662 first, I replaced every cap with new, still sounded the same, so I managed to find someone who could make a modern high-quality replacement, a bit pricey, but I bit the bullet & went for it, well, they look nothing like the originals, but, I have to say that they sound great again.
Now for the 66, I STILL would like to have a go & re-cap before replacing the entire crossover, & here's by problem, upon studying the caps, I see that there is a 'bundle' of 2 x 1.5mf & 1 x 1mf caps to make up 4mf, then somewhere else there is a separate, single 4mf !! WHY??
Can I simply fit 2 single 4s?
Its repeated again with 4 x 1.5 to make a 6, then other side of the board a separate 6, if its to do with power handling, then surely I replace with a single higher voltage cap, or am I completely off track??

I assume the 4 and 6 uF are cheap electrolytics and the capacitors in the HF section are higher quality film types. Reason for paralleling multiple smaller units may have been price, availability or loss reduction.

Hi, as you are the first person that I have seen on the forum who has both the 66 from new and 662 would you mind posting your impressions of both with regard to sound quality as one sees posts that imply that the 662 was not as good as the 66, and then there are others who say that the 662 is the best speaker ever. Have you ever done an A/B comparison of the two?

GSX, if you get a good cap with low ESR, then yes, you can just combine the values. Chances are any modern and good quality film cap you buy will be fine under 5uF.

In inexpensive film caps, try the Mundorf MKP's. Around $7 each. A step up would be the Clarity ESA or Mundorf Evo in Oil, both under $20 each. Others really like Audyn, or Jantzen, but if you are replacing old electrolytic caps, chances are anything will be better.

Best,

Erik

Well i DID say the 662's sounded great again, but a side by side comparison tells me that they are not as good as the 66's, but of course its MY impression & MY hearing, but all who have heard them agree with me.
I'm 70 now & obviously my hearing is gone somewhat, but I can still hear a difference & the 662's just don't sound as good.

Hi GSX1400,

The use of capital letters on a forum implies that you are shouting at me, so I hope that there wasn't anything in my question that offended you as that was not my intention.

When I said that one sees posts with differing opinions I wasn't referring to your posts, but to varying opinions about the two speakers on the Web in general.

Your posts have been very useful, as I own a pair of 662's (that need a Tweeter coil rewinding repair), but was wondering if I should start looking out for a pair of 66's if they are substantially better sounding. With the wood veneer front they are definitely better looking than the 662.

Cheers,

Ross

About three months ago I was lucky enough to find a pair of Celestion Ditton 662 in a thrift store. I then had them recapped and I think they are some best sounding speakers I have ever heard in my life. But now I see all this debate on which is better, the 662s or the 66. Well I have come to a solution. I just bought a beautiful pair of 66's. I guess I will find out for myself which is better and I will post the results here. Stay tuned.

Just bought a pair of 662 and I love them. They sound good to me even without a recap. I would say the only minor weakness I can hear is separation and transparency, particularly in listening to classical symphonies.

I'm thinking about doing a recap down the road. Does anyone has a crossover diagram here? Thanks!
