hey people, i got a CDX-M8800 which has suddenly got weird on me! You got the two displays aint u, the big one when its closed and then when its opened you got a smaller display on the control panel right?
well, when you open the control panel you get the whole thing lighted up in blue? well i got no lights, and the little display menu does not show anything now as if i somehow turned it off!?
i thought it might be broken, but for the split second when you close the unit, at night if u peak down the tiny gab the screen is on and all the lights then light up!
soooo confused, any help would be very useful!?

There is a ribbon cable connecting the face to the motherboard
the part number is 186181112 It can be obtained from Pacific Coast Parts 1-800-421-5080

The following instructions are from memory and are general for all Sony units with the two sided face. So if something does not seem exactly right for your unit, please stop and let me know what doesn't seem right. I check here daily and will be happy to clear up any questions you have.
Remove the top cover of your radio. Roll the big gear by hand to drop the face enough to get to the screws that secure the face to the mechanism, slide the face off and set it on the bench remember the ribbon cable is still attatched. behind the face are 2 screws that mount the cd mechanism, remove them. Then on each side (in the rear) there is a screw that also mounts the cd. remove them then lift the mechanism. I don't remember if there is a socket that will unplug just by lifting the unit or if there is a ribbon cable to disconnect after lifting so when you lift, do it slowly and look for a cable to unplug.
Here is where the fun begins at this point you can see the cable that you are going to replace. Take a picture of it so you can see how it goes through the tensioner. Where the ribbon attatches to the board there is a brown clip that has to be slid gently toward the rear of the radio. This will release the cable. Pull it out of the socket.
The tensioner mounts to the board in 3 positions one in the rear center and on the front on each side just grab it in the rear and pull gently rearward while lifting up. After the rear is removed just push it forward and lift the front.
Where the cable goes into the face look for a removable panel if there is one pop it out and you can get to the locking mechanism, it is just like the one on the motherboard. If there is no panel, go to the next step.
On the face there are 3 screws that have to be removed. Now the trick is to get a fingernail between the 2 pieces of the face and seperate them. After you get them apart there are 4 screws that mount the board to the face. After removing the screws and lifting the board out, DO NOT TURN THE FACE OVER
buttons will fall out. then you can get to the cable same kind of lock that was on the motherboard. Change cable then reassemble the face. Insert the cable back into the tensioner. Plug it into the board and slide the lock back toward the front of the radio. Then reassemble the radio. Remember to put the 2 screws into the front of the CD mechanism before you put the face back on.

I am having trouble rolling down the front. It seems to be helt/stuck somewhere.
Could you tell me how to roll down the front by hand?
Thank you in advance.
Cheers,
Robbie

I just put it back in my car, turned the display to 'open' and turned off power so it wouldn't close itself again.
Took me about an hour to replace the cable! Thank you a lot for the how-to you posted! My M8800 is working again, the way it always used to work! 😀
The pictures on this website were very usefull to me while replacing the cable.
Cheers,
Robbie

I have ust replaced the cable with these great instructions and after being especially careful and remembering to put it back in the reverse order have installed back into the car and nothing - no power nout at all, tried pressing and holding in the reset button for up to 20 seconds and nothing what so ever?
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks.
