I am messing with a cdrom and trying to get it to be a cd player. A simple task, but being a pain.
If I plug in the Analog out connectors at the rear to output to rca sockets my headphone jack switches off as would be expected. However no sound is coming out the analog outputs.
I dont want to output to my amp through the jackplug as I want to rehouse the unit in an enclosure to match my amp and would like to have the rca outs.
Anyone else had this problem before and how can I get round it.

I would head to the local library and page through a stack of Elektor Electronics. I'm pretty sure they've done it sometime in the past decade and a half... 🙂 I know they built their own CD player, but it used a premade transport.

Hi littlerick,
Take a look at this thread, it might be of interest to you http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/swap-meet/30529-another-cdrom-controller-kit.html

I'm not to worried about the display n stuff, its just a prototype to mess with... Working is all I need at the moment.
I'll worry about pretty when its going 🙂

It has two buttons on front... One is for the eject and the other is a play/next track button.
It works and plays fine, my only problem is trying to use the analog output on the back. It cuts the headphones but no sound comes through amplifier.

I have no idea... I plug it into a pc power supply... put a disk in and it will play through the headphone socket at the front. When I plug my cable into the rear analog out, it cuts the headphone socket off, but no sound comes out to the amplifier.
I figured if its got analog output attached it should work.

I’m not 100% sure what the CD-ROM “Analogue Out” is used for 😕, but I’m pretty damm sure that it isn’t analogue audio. The digital signal will need to be processed through a DAC to get usable audio

These days CDROM drives usually don't have analog outputs, or headphone jacks, but they all used to.
Can't tell why littlerick's analog out isn't working, though.
OK.. that could be a very good reason for it not working then... maybe I should just use headphone output and run it into 2 rca's. Or I suppose i could solder my rca direct to where the headpone socket is... I got a few old CDroms, so I'm ok to fry a couple trying.

It is absolutely an analog output! It's supposed to connect to a soundcard internally, but this way of connecting was made obsolete.
It should still have a DAC onboard and it should definitely work.
It just won't be very good. 😉
If you're not getting sound, double check the wiring of the analog out cable and connector. Looking at the back of a random DVDROM, it should go RGGL. Try another drive, if available.
Vintage SCSI Plextor CDROMs (circa 12x) had play buttons, as does a Lite-On LTD-163D IDE DVDROM, if anyone is looking for this style of drive.

Got it sussed... I had the wires on output wrong way round... Didnt think audio was so fussy about + and - as long as one is in each... Guess I was wrong!
Plays ok now... Looks like a bag of %$*&, but it works lol
Are there any cheap cd kits about, all the ones I find are silly money. I'm not fussed about audiophile quaility just a simple kit.
I guess I can go on the hunt for an old cd player and rip it apart... I'm fantastic at getting stuff to bits.... Still working on the putting it back together bit, but its all good fun eh!
