CD-ROM Controller kit

For those of you not familliar with CD-ROM drives, try to find a Plextor CD-ROM drive, any model. These are the quietest, best built CD-ROM made. The CD-RW drives are even better.

They have excellent speed control, by far the best laser and one of the most reliable transports ever built.

Go ask the technician in a local computer shop that has been around for a while. Whne they trash an old PC or server, most will pull the Plextor drives, even if they have no use for them. They are just too good to throw away.

You should be able to find one for $25 or so.

Digital out works too.

Built a little Toslink adapter Toshiba totx176. Just follow the connections in the datasheet. In every CD/DVD ROM there is two pins next to the analog audio output in the back. That is the spdif output but it is TTL level which I think is 5volts. Rather that risk frying my DAC, I Decided to use toslink which can take the 5V spdif fine.

All you need is 5V power which is the same needed by the controller and one 8.2Kohm resistor.

Samsung 1602VFD

Hi all~

I got a good news for I getting some 1602VFD made by Samsung,that's great too,it perfect
compatible to the 1602LCD.You can replace the 1602LCD to this VFD display!If you have some LCD CDROM controller or some LCD Remote Volume Controller,you can use this Samsung VFD instead!It would "cold" in dark night ^_^..too😀

The digital out on CD-ROM drives is already buffered S/PDIF, ready for coax to an outboard DAC. The S/PDIF is spec'd for 5V TTL levels. There is no risk of hurting any DAC by sending this signal direct through a coax cable into your DAC, Received or whatever. 😀

Just use a 2-pin mini molex cable (you can trim off two pins from a 4-pin connector easily) and solder the wires to an RCA jack. Make sure that the wire that connects to the G pin goes to the center of the RCA (so the wire from the G <ground> wire goes to the barrel of the RCA). This is the digital ground, so DO NOT ground of the RCA to the chassis of whatever chassis your CD-ROM is mounted in.

Now, just plug a decent 50ohm Coax cable between this new RCA and your coax input and away you go!

I have always found that coax S/PDIF sounds better that Toslink, but whatever you prefer.
