Hi all
I am rethinking my cd transport, perhaps I just hunger for a top loader....
I now use a CDM9pro based Theta Data Basic II and have been surprised by a CDM4/11 based Mission PCMII that have been messing with.
My hot rod Philips CD620 (cdm4/19) never sounded as good as the Mission...
Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts on CDM4/11 vs CDM9pro vs the CDpro2? What would be your mechanism of preferance and why.
I know the CDM1 is probably the finest but I have never yet found any players for sale using it, cdm1 Mkii once....
A friend has a Marantz CD95 drive using cdm1 and it is great. Although I think our modified Theta units are better then the modified Marantz...
Any thoughts and experiences with these mechanisms welcome..

CDM 4/11 uses brushless motor that are much superior to ordinary motors used in CDM 9 or CDM 4/19.
CDM 4/11 is pretty much identical to CDM 1MKII. The only diffrance is the chassis, that the motor and laser are attached to. It is made of plastic in CDM 4/11 instead of aluminium in CDM 1MKII.
As to the sound I think a lot depends on implementation, not only on drive used.
It's not so hard to find CD-player with CDM 1 and digital output. Philips CD 960 (it is Marantz CD 94 with diffrent front panel) or CD 304MKII might be a fine example, but one have to put a lot of work to get a full potential of those drives.

The CDM9 pro (CDM9/60) in my Theta also uses a brushless hall motor and aluminium "turntable/spindle".
Here in South Africa not many folks bought into early CD so there are very few of the first Philips players to be had...
Also, people seem to buy upmarket brands rather then high end product from mass market brands.
There are for instance more Arcam Delta 70(.2) units out there then similarly priced Philips machines. More rotel rcd865/965 then Philips CD850. Not to speak of the complete rarity of things like CD960.
I know the implementation is key.. Just do not want to waste money on a pro2 or get stuck with a dead laser player that I have invested into PSU and case etc for in the case of the older types...
From what you say it would seem that a CDM4/11 or 19 laser arm could be transferred to a CDM1 MK11? This would be interesting as there are cdm4/19 mechs to be had out there...

G
Many say the CDM9pro is best ever but the pro2 gets raves 2.. Then some prefer the older ones again. I guess it would be impossible to do real true comparison as the electronics surrounding these different transports will always be different...
Dear tubenut,
I'd like to ask you , if it's possible, to make a pictires of CDM9pro and publish here, Its very interesting to see it.
Many thanks

What CDP is that Gasho?
That loader looks like a modified cdm4 loader....
Mine looks very different. No clamp, the mech gets dropped and lifted onto a magnetic puck held above. Very similar to standard Sony loaders.

It is Rotel RCD990.
In this case the CD is droped down to mechanisam so the CDM9pro is not moveing at all. He lay on rigid metal frame.

What can we replace them with?
how many of these transports are still being manufactured
i have only seen reference to the cd-pro2.
high quality unit but no cheap.
with upredes being done to cdprayers extending there life
when the laser dies and eventually they will.
What can we replace them with?
S/hand units, unknown useage?
Are the only good transports, philips units?
Any other brands useful?

I've got some brand new CDM 4 / 28 -any interest for those ? What would be a reasonable prize for such items ?? I guess they are hard to find and these are still ''vacuumpacked'' in the original box. Change to 4 / 25 can be wery interesting as well.
Wich different CDM's can be changed without problems ?? Is 4 / 11 and 4 / 25, 28 the same motors and laser, but only different servo-board ?

my theta data II just broke - it uses a sony KSA-130A transport (laserdisc). is it worth fixing and how does it compare to a transport with the CDM-9 Pro?
thanks,
Robby
