CDM4/19 Radial Arm Jam

Thought I'd share the fix I just made to my Marantz CD52mk2.

I got out this player after having not used it for a while (maybe three weeks), turned it on, put in a CD to play, and went back to what I was doing. About 2/3rds of the way through the CD it started to skip. I went over and pressed the skip track button, assuming the CD was scratched. The CD stopped, and after that the player would not read the TOC.

This being one of my better players, I was fairly annoyed.

So I pulled it apart, removed the mechanism and found the cause; the radial arm was only traveling freely along the first 2/3rds of its track, as shown below.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I flipped the mechanism over and found one of the two permanent magnets (marked A) for the radial arm drive had dislodged and was fouling the arm.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I found the simply pushing the magnet back in place fixed the problem, but I assumed it would slip out again. To fix that, I tightened the two screws securing the magnet retaining plate(one screw visible to the left of B), first removing the bearing retainer plate (marked C).

Hope this helps somebody, it was sure better than finding that the laser was dead.

Anton
