Cdm-4/19

No problems yet...

But it would have been nice to have a spare.

It is actually the quickest CD-player I have tried!
(toc-reading, start-command and track-change) .

Hmmm, need to get the servicemanual, then; Tweak-Time!

AFAIK there were no plastic lenses in the time CDM 4 was produced. It was years after production of CDM 4 that Philips announced that they stopped producing glass lenses. Probably when they started producing my favorite ( CDM 12 ) :bawling:

Off-topic: I was called by a friend today that he was disappointed in CD Pro 2. He tried it with a Tent XO3 and fed it with lead-acid batteries but nevertheless a Teac VRDS 10 was much better when used with a separate DAC.

That makes me wonder as I was enthousiastic about CD Pro 2's capabilities after hearing one. He also tried a Philips CDD882 ( no internal DAC ) with CDM 1 and it was better too.

When possible I will bring one of my modified CDM 4 machines to do a comparison with the VRDS.

please excuse i feel not experienced enough to easily write a judgment about sound. IMO there are to many judgements of this kind in the board😉 One definite advantage of swingarms before the CD PRO2 i like is there isn´t this linear head - drive noise.

Hi Jean-Paul,

What is your comment between CDM4 and CDM9?

I have a CD630 which has a CDM4/19 and it performs quite satisfactory. And one of my friend is offering me a LHH200 which use CDM9 (bitstream though), is this machine good to use as a transport?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers🙂

Sorry MDlover, I don't know LHH200 but CDM 9 is a very good mechanics. When used as a transport you'll probably have to change the output transformer for a better one ( and maybe disconnect the bitstream circuitry for a cleaner SPDIF signal ).

I´m very interested in the results.

I should start a philips Cd transport collection: so far i have one CD PRO2, one CDM2, playing, 3 CDM4-31 and a handfull CDM4-19 as spare parts....

Mmm, know the feeling... Just missing CDM9, rest is all there.
1&2&4&12 playing, 3!&12 on the shelf and a 4 which thinks it's a 2 :->

Ordered some 4/19's too....

Must be mad!

PS, i don't have a sep dac, so don't ask about sound diff.
It's more 4 fun.

If the laser is gone, you might be able to swap only that. Could be that you get a plastic lense instead of glass, but you still have the metal transport. Or just replace with the standard cdm4, might not be so good (?), but you have it running again.

Today i fixed a CD10 this way. It has a CD4/36 metal transport which was broken (laser). I was able to get the tranport out without too much hassle and took of the laser assembly.

I replaced it with one of the polling CD4/19 assemblies. So i took the transports apart to be able to swap only the laser: the spindle motor is much better on CD4/36 than CD4/19 and they are different. A direct swap of the transport is therefore not possible.

Guess what 😀 😀 😀 Working fine. Pitty it is not my player :bawling: :bawling: The mechanics are awsome and it is very easy to remove the DAC pcb to insert your own stuff using i2s. Transport part is easy to service with el-cheapo philips players; same laser and same chips to control the transport and 7310 decoder (got a cd210 tonight with same chips :clown: )

I did not touch the pots for focus and laser. So i guess it needs to be adjusted. Anyone with the manual for cd10/16 who can tell me how to ???

Have some vague pics on my phone, post them later.

Greetings,

Work in progress 😀

Spot the differences between 4/19 and 4/36 😎

DAC PCB,

NPC dig filter (dip) and SAA DAC to generate bitstream underneath. The two other SMD's are the TDA1547's.
Opamps above them for the output

On the left connecter there should be the i2s signals among
other stuff. Top connector is powersupply and audio out i think.

Under the PCB a big powersupply pcb and on the left the player's controller (68HC11 iirc).

Easy to swap the DAC....:clown: But it's not mine :whazzat:

Of course, when you replace a broken laser by the same type it should work 😉 Just be careful with the metal sheet of the bearing and work ESD safe with those oldies. The metal sheet serves an alignment adjustment ( as described in most CDM 4 cdplayers manuals ). Keep the paperclip on the flexprints contacts till you put the mechanics in the cdplayer.

Can't you use a manual of whatever type with CDM 4 for the electronic adjustments ? There is not much difference in general.

CDM9 and CDM9 pro

Hi all

Just on CDM9/44 vs CDM9 pro. The metal case for the mech is definately different, one has a brushed finnish the other is just shiny plating.

More importantly though, the CDM9 pro uses a brushles hall effect motor where the 44 uses a std affair.

I have just repaired a Theta Data Basic (bought as salvage/scrap for about 80 euros as all who ever looked at it decided the mech is obsolete and unobtainable.)
The 9/44 and 9 pro lasers are interchangeable.

I do not know if one is glass and the other plastic or if there are tolerance differnces. Do not want to mess anything up just to find out. Transport works well now and sounds good, better then my ho rodded Philips CD620 (CDM4/19) ever did.

Theta will still get some soft recovery diodes and a better clock one day....
