CD63KI sibilance

I really apologise if this is covered somewhere in the CD63 mods thread, but it's almost 2000 pages long now, and the forum search isn't the best I've encountered - or I'm too dim to tweak it to get the results I'm looking for.

I have a CD63KI and the one thing which has always irritated me about what is a nicely made player is the way it seems to emphasise treble frequencies and imparts a sibilance ( " SSSS " ) to vocals and cymbals.
I have used it with several different combinations of amps and speakers and the best results - to my ears - were with a Quad 44 preamp and a 303 power amp. The Quad tone controls tamed the high frequency emphasis, but that " SSSS - tshhh " was still present on a lot of recordings.

So :-
1) Am I imagining this ?
2) If not, what is the way forward, short of replacing the CD63 ? I don't have the budget for another CD player

The CD63 does have some sibilance, unmodified out-of-the-box, which can be tamed if you pick the right upgrades from the 2000-page thread.

My shortlist (not exhaustive) of mods would be:

1) Upgrade the opamps (2x duals) to high-performance opamps (the best are discretes)
2) Bypass the HDAMs
3) Bypass or substitute the output electrolytics with film/foil caps
4) Replace bypass electrolytics in the analog section with better ones like Black Gate PK.

There are many more mods related to regulators, clocks, DAC bypassing, etc., but those are all mostly icing on the cake, IMHO.

try altering the filter to remove this harshness replace c605/6 with styroflex 470pf 😉

I'll keep it Al, I got lucky on Ebay and paid about £50 for it brand new in the box about four years ago. I did put an aftermarket clock in it a while back, but I couldn't hear any difference in the sound whatsoever.
Still had that "TSHH" noise on cymbals and the "SSSS" on vocals.

To be honest I have never liked the sound of CD's - that's probably my problem rather than the source itself. I wish I hadn't sold my Systemdek and vinyl collection before we emigrated, but shipping was expensive and some stuff just had to be left behind.
