Can anyone recommend a modern low distortion pin compatible replacement for the CD4066 or failing that something that is not pin compatible

I've found for some older equipment, only a 4066 will do. The CD4066B and many others are an active component with TI, and you can order right from their web site. There are many "DG" prefix parts like DG419 that are good for new designs, depending on voltage, number of switches, etc, but I don't think a drop in for the 4066 exists. Look at 4016 too.

The 4066 is basically a better spec 4016. Lower on resistance. As always, it depends on the application as to how well they perform.

Never seen the 66 ( Only the 44 etc ) circuit so can't really comment. Used correctly though the CMOS switches are pretty transparent to audio. The secret is configuring them so that no audio voltage is ever developed across the switch, which usually means using them in as part of a "virtual earth" opamp arrangement.
I am thinking of subtitute the 4066 with TS3A44159 from analog Device etc. so that a better signal transfer is acheived across the switches as compared to 4066.Anyway I am totally new in this area so practical advise is needed.

Never heard of the IC you mention but as a general rule a lot depends on the exact application. If the switch can be arranged so that for example it works into a virtual earth amp then the effects of it are negligable as there is never any voltage developed across it.
I used discrete FET's to achieve the same result,
