Does anyone know why Memorex and Sony blank cd-r media
brands will always produce a reliable initializable cd in my home computer but Phillips ones will hardly ever work.
I transfer my old lp's onto cd using my home computer, a Benz Glider cartridge and a NAD moving coil preamp. I have had very good luck with Sony and Memorex but Phillips media cause my player to hunt and hunt and eventually show the "NO DISC"
message.
I can say it is not a matter of burn speed being too fast as even 8x doesn't work.
I do notice that the Phillips disc's are more transparent than the other two brands.
Would marking the edge with a black magic marker help ???
I have heard markers can melt the plastic .........

Some discs are manufactured close to the limits of spec.
Some discs are made in different plants.
Some discs won't work
Some discs will.
Just stick to the discs that are working.
I had similar problems with TDK CD
and Maxell DVDs. . . they used to work
now they don't. . .looked at the places
where they were made. . .different plant
now. . .

I avoid house brands. . .I have a friend who uses expensive CDRs.
I hate to say. . I buy what's on sale. . . even though upwards of $1.00
per disc is cheap storage(1.4 cents per MB).
I used to use the TDK DVD -Rs and +Rs white label. . .they changed them
by making them in a new factory. Wouldn't register in DVD recorder
as anything better than a 2.4x. . . yet they were 16x.
Currently I am using HPs CDRs and DVD +Rs and -Rs. I used TDKs for
two years straight without a hitch.
I have a stack of TDK CDs that work fine and some Sony DVD +Rs
that work fine.
It all comes down to your recorder. . . if it works with a specific disc
brand then use that disc.

two or three years. . . never know when a disc might go belly up.

Media is risky. I have HP dvd blanks that are the same manufacturer as the Staples house brand, which are different than the Staples that are a year old, which were the same as maxell - I think ?!!???
There are small programs that can be downloaded for free (google it) that will analyze the media and reveal the maker and revision. There are also sites that can give you and idea of who's media is made by who(??) and you could possibly avoid the ones that don't work for you. The problem is that things change without notice🙄

The last spindle of 50 Sony's i bought wouldn't work in my CD-R... seems to work fine in my wife's.
