I was very close to buying a CD-PRO2M kit on another site, but I did some research here and found many things being done with these transports. I am not an electrical engineer, but a very good tech. I can assemble anything that is already figured out. What I am asking is I need it all figured out. The reason I won't buy the kit I found is two fold. 1. I asked if the I2S could output the LSBRJ (Japanese) format and never got an answer. 2. They stated they were comming out with a DAC kit and I asked if it was 1x oversampling. Their responce was no and that all DACs do oversampling. Well I decided not to buy their CD-PRO2M kit so I am asking here where should I get the most up to date parts and software and what format can the I2S out be configured as?
The I2S format can't be "configured" per se. It is a raw stream which some DAC chips can receive directly without a receiver chip (i.e. CS 8412). So if you're building a CD player using the I2S stream from the CD-Pro, you'll have to build (or modify) a DAC utilizing a DAC chip which can receive I2S directly. Some of the non-oversampling DACs can handle I2S, if this is the direction that you want to go.
So, if you want a "kit" and don't want to have to engineer the display and control software and electronics, the best source is likely Daisy. You'll still have to build a DIY power supply as they don't have one available as a kit. Otherwise, you're other choice is the DIY supplier (Ken) via Taiwan, and this kit is complete with case, power supply, etc., and at the price is a better value, but you'll have to do some modification to grab the I2S data to feed to your DAC (either outboard, or built within the same case).

This is the direction I want to go, I am using a Proceed CDD transport and an Audio note DAC.1.x. I would like to build the most up to date CD-PRO2M diy kit and incorporate a 1x oversampling DAC and spend less then $1200.00. The Ack dAck looks very interesting and got good reviews. The AN DAC1.1x uses the AD1865N and Ack dAck uses the TDA1545A , but the TDA1545A doesn't input I2S info. I have also found here that allot of people like the TDA1541 and it does take the I2S as well as the TDA1543. So I am interested in building a CD-PRO2M cd player with no receiver chip in 1x oversampling and use the I2S format. There is also a thread here that is discussing a computer cdrom drive as a transport with a controller. This could be a more cost effective cd player and I am open to this too. I am using a Karan KAi180 integrated amp and Merlin VSM-M speakers and the Karan is fully balanced. A set of balanced outputs from the cd player would be nice. It is not a problem bulding this diy project the engineering is the problem for me. I don't write code or design circuits, but can assemble and solder very well. I am open to any suggestions/design ideas.
I own a Proceed CCD transport and haven’t yet made up my mind regarding a better transport. Potential choices are:
- CD-PRO2(M) kit; on audiocircle there is a thread about a kit based on the that drive (http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/viewtopic.php?t=15419&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0). Unfortunately I can’t view the http://www.diyzone.net link, my Explorer 5.5 here crashes.
- Buy an seond hand player with a CDM2 or 4 unit in it (some experts here claim those units are better than the PRO2(M).
The best is that I choose both alternatives and find out about that claim myself, however time and funds are restricted.
Until now I made some general mods to the Proceed transport (which is based on a decent transport, namely the CDM12-PRO). They are:
1. added a Tent clock and its separate power supply from Guido Tent
2. replaced the reg (7805) that feeds the digital output circuit, for a LM1085
3. replaced the 2 rectifier bridges by fast recovery diodes
Pace, details and tonal structure has improved tremendously by these mods. I would advice you to try at least mod 1. As it can be re-used for the PRO2-ket you are planning.

Thank you Calimero for the info. I may end up doing those modes to my CDD, but you also mentioned players using the CDM2 and CDM4 mechanisims. I did a search earlier to find other players that had a I2S out and found no info. Can you please post some reasonable priced units that use these or others that may be used to output I2S to a TDA1541?
I don't speak japanese neither chinese.Calimero said:Unfortunately I can’t view the http://www.diyzone.net link, my Explorer 5.5 here crashes.

Hi Kip,
a lot of information has been posted here on which brands/models use which CDM mechanisms. Jean-Paul is one of the experts on this form regarding this topic.
You could do a search (I always use google instead of this forum's lousy search) on for instance 'Philips Marantz diy CDM'
Here are 2 links that can be intesting for the purpose of determining which second hand player to buy in case you are looking for a CDM4 or 9. When considering such player you should be aware that lasers for the oldest units (CDM1 and 2) are hard (impossible) to get.

What is the price of the kit that Ken provides? And is there a link to a site that explains about this specific kit? I have heard about it before but haven't been able to find any additional info about it! Hope you can help!
Here is the link for the kit dezzz, it also started this post.

I looked into this kit and they were not sure about the I2S or 0x oversampling dacs which is having me look elsewhere. Maybe I should look again?

The CD-PRO2M is user configurable via its DSA interface. I2S and EIAJ are among the many the formats it can be configured for and those two cover just about every multibit dac. It is all covered in the service manual available at the Daisy Laser site.

here you go

he told me shipping to the US is $45
there are a few upgrades in the works right now (pulse transformers for SPDIF out, some cap changes, etc)
look here for more info:

I'm undecided, as I was really going to move towards a computer source after recent comparison tests, but I like swapping CDs rather than browsing through file listings, so I may give the CD spinning idea another chance with this transport as the base, but $750 is quite a bit of cash, so I am waiting to hear from others who take the plunge first 😉

I have decided to go with the kit that I wasn't shure about earlier in this post. Now I need to decide on a direct I2S input dac chip and design. I was in favor of the TDA1541 in this design http://www.geocities.com/agalavotti/zerodac.htm , but I am not shure. I just sold an Audio Note dac with the AD1865N chip. I want 1x oversampling and no receiver chip using the I2S out of the CD-PRO-2M kit. I would like to go out balanced and single ended without any I/V. Just the dacs. What are your thoughts?
Just a thought,
could you possiblly take the I2S output from the CDPRO2M and send it to a modified Scott Nixon DAC? His standard product has the Receiver chip you don't want to use but you could tap onto the I2S lines after the receiver chip to the philips dac chip he uses in his design.

I was thinking of the same thing paba. I was looking at this http://www.diyparadise.com/dackit/1543dackit.html
Now which one? There could be more using the TDA1543 and I read that maybe balanced. Some designs with 1, 4 and some with 8 dacs. The TDA1545, I read, may sound better, but no I2S input and the TDA1541 may sound better, but needs an I/V curcuit.
What about other dac manufaturers?
I want a direct to I2S R2R converter operating on true sample-rate (no oversampling) and true sample-values, no receiver chip, no separate I/V stage, true balanced out.

get the cdm12 micro-controller kit and you are on your way!

you can configure i2s, eiaj, at 1xfs, 2xfx, 4xfs and have all the fun you want with various dac chips.

Thank you,
Yeo sent me a E-mail about this contoller a week ago, but I had already purchased the diy CD-PRO2M kit. I would like to use my kit and output EIAJ to run directly into a TDA1543 dac chip. I am almost finished the kit. The controller in the kit has an EPROM and if it was possible to make a simple change in software or a jumper on the board to configure the CD-PRO2M to output EIAJ, I would have want I want.
The kit designer hasn't responded with an answer to the EIAJ queston yet.

I recently purchased a Hafler motherboard for an IRIS CD Player that uses the CDM12 drive. My question is I assumed the CDM12 and CDPRO are "PIN" compatible, can anyone verify that for me

According to a couple of jukebox supply sites, the CD-Pro is a "drop-in" replacement for the -12, so it should be pin-compatible.
