CD player vs digital music server

This is all very amusing.

I run Daphile on an old core 2 Duo with a NAS as data store, controlled by Android Logitech Squeezebox Controller. I use Wake-on-Lan to turn the box on, pick what I want to play and it sounds as good as the expensive CD player I sold off. The music comes from active speakers. I hope the purchaser finds pleasure from my CD player because I don't miss it at all.

Um, sorry to disappoint you on server backup.

My active music files live on a Solaris system that is also my mail server.

I have two WD NAS drives I use for backup. My music is backed up weekly to both systems. I have a whole-house surge suppressor, and have yet to loose any data, even with drive failures. . .

You are far from disappointing me - it is a pleasure to read about such a setup.

I would still bet that 99% of people who set up a multimedia server to host their music resorts only to that box ...

Forget CDP and Forget Servers - both will be gone soon...

I wonder if there is really a future for Servers, I suspect their lives will be even shorter than CD, it'self shorter lifetime than Vinyl. Why ? - music Streaming. With internet access we will have access, eventually, to a virtually infinite high resolution juke box. The $ being invested in Servers surely pales into comparison with the $ being invested into streaming services along with the software. That just leaves the DAC for us to worry about.... and explains why the big companies are not jumping too fast onto the Server bandwagon - they are spreading their bets by also looking at Streaming.

Hi,

Those who own a decent music server for sure won't ever return to CD again.
Imho CD is a media short of the end of its lifespan ... its dead already ... just a few who haven't noticed yet 😛

I agree.... and I find the HDef mastered downloads and a good file server to sound superiour to CD. I just was wondering why. Is it jitter? or ?

Well a good PC server or PC streamer is essentially the same thing anyway. One pulls its data from the internet and one the hard disk. The streamer will have a hard disk anyway so...
