This may be old news to some people, but I cannot find much info for the availability of CD players or transports using I2S out from the transport mechanism. I have seen it written, that most Philips CD players post 1996 use I2S out from the transport, but would really like to know what CD player makes and models have this. I am assuming that the SPDIF bus is far more common.

I know that this is a big ask, but something like the thread on this site with CD players vs transports/DACS.🙂

Hi,
You can find some information on lampizator website: lampizator_DIY NOS Non Over Sampling modification
TDA1541A

Many old famous cd players have TDA1541 dac chips. Their transports have I2S out for the TDA1541 dac chips. You can get the I2S out easily from the 1,2,3 legs of TDA1541 dac + ground. For example, i made this connection as described in lampizator using 4 cables. I connected my Marantz CD60 with these four cables to directly my 8XTDA1541A nos dac circuit. With I2S connection dac is sounding more accurate, better. If you wish to use these old cd players in non oversampling mode, you must bypass the digital filter SAA7310 or SAA7210. After the non os modification WOW! Makes a big improvement on sound. Difference is like the white and black.

SPDIF is a format for interconnecting digital equipment, it actually is not used by any CD player. They all use a format that is native to the particular transport, there are several, I2S is one of them. Look up a processor chip and you will see what inputs it can accept.

GOOGLE is your friend.

That's now in my 'bookmark'. 🙂

As a matter of interest, is I2S still being used to date? I understand also, that there are other standards used, but I2S is what I shall be looking for.

Can I2S be used with other chips? It's all well and good to use Google, but you need to know what you are looking for and I, do not.

I2S is a very commonly used internal digital format in newer designs. Note that most dac chips can support several formats in addition to standard I2S - you just need to look at the specification sheet for the dac you are interested in to determine whether the format you want to use is supported.
