I'm new here but think I'll fit right in. I'm sure this is an easy question but I'm stumped.
I have an Optimus CD8100 that was given to me years ago by my father. I know it is not anything special as far as CD players go. I keep it for sentimental reasons. The problem is that it has a mind of its own. It seems to randomly pick which disks it wants to play. I can put in 5 disks and it may show that all 5 are there or in may show that none are there. I've put the same disks in and opened and closed it several times and get a different result each time. I took the cover off just to see if I could tell if there was something physical causing the problem but there is not. I've searched or a schematic and service manual but found nothing. Can anyone help? The shelf system I have it hooked to has built in disks player that does the same thing. They are not my primary listening units, I just have them on my porch to listen while I'm outside.

if you post a picture of the inetrnals, somebody may recognize some parts and suggest where to find replacements.
In particular the "transport" unit and the laser.

No, it's not always easy. Sometimes the laser is knackered.
As a couple of basic things to try...
Take the top off the unit (unplugged first) and clean the laser lens with a cotton bud (Q-tip) and lens cleaner. Do this with the LIGHTEST of touches, as it is suspended on hair-thin copper wires. You cannot press on it - just waft the tip over the lens until the cleaning fluid dries.
Secondly, clean and lubricate the CD 'sled' mechanicals. This is commonly a pair of chromed rods which the mechanism moves along. I use a light teflon oil for the rods, although there are various sled mechanisms. Basically, just make sure it can move easily. Also, make sure any gears and worm drives are clean and lightly lubricated.
