cd/m2 definition

When a lcd monitor states its specs as brightness of say 450cd/m2 does this mean the brightness capability of the lcd crystals or of the backlight which we throw away?

I would think it would be the brightness measured as the backlight shines through the LCD panel...

It's the backlight... not how much light travels through the LCD. Just like our projectors. Put a stronger light behind ANY LCD and it'll be brighter 🙂

Thanks. So the cd/m2 is irrelevant to us then. I wanted to confirm because I kept seeing these specs mentiond all over the board when describing monitors.
