So maybe I'm going slightly mad...

Here is what is troubeling me: When I'm in the mood of letting my vinyl to cool down, i'm typically also very layzy and want music via remote control.

Therefore I've created images of all my CD's and stored those with the DVD on a file server.
What I'm now looking for is a program that can play the CD images directly without the need to mount the image first. in other words click on the image and the CD starts. Anyone any idea?

I'm also open for suggestions on playback SW. It has to be based on PCM as I hate Mp3.

Maybe rip your collection once more but use one of the rippers that uses techniques to perfectly rip them and encode them to a lossless format such as FLAC... then you have the world at your finger tips in terms of playback software.... (also you'l save on disk space).

In terms of remote control... do you have a tv card with a remote? If so there are several pieces of software out there that you can use to setup that remote to control a media player. Got a phone with bluetooth? With a usb bluetooth stick and foobar you have a remote controlled system... got an iphone? Wireless router and there is a plethora of network controllable playback softwares... the world is your oyster! 😀
