I have a PCM2902 DAC connected to my USB port and NO sound card installed whatsoever.
The computer is running XP.
I've recorded a number of WAV files using Total recorder to my hard drive at 44.1 and 16bit using the output of the CDROM and recorded through "software"....(media player).
Yet when I compare the fidelity between a specific song from the music CD and the same song in the recorded WAV file, I hear a definite "muddiness" on the WAV recording.
Can someone educate me a bit on the possible pitfalls of this process......theoretically, they should be the SAME but the CD has a definite edge.

Make sure the volume is at max on the computer when using the USB device and all other mixer settings are disabled.
Whats "total recorder" ??
You shouldnt hear the difference between the WAV and the CD, if the WAV is recorded properly... so i would be blaming "total recorder" at the moment.
Go try the CD ripping software everyone else uses.. EAC (exact audio copy).
Itll give bit perfect WAV copies of CDs.

(A) What exactly is going on with windows "volume control"?
Is it a passive (transparent) device?
(B) I've been searching alot this afternoon and keep hearing about "exact audio copy".......I'm going to download and do an A/B comparison.
Fact is, Total recorder will do it's magic "on the fly" and maybe that's where the problem is.......even if they claim it's PCM 44.1 and 16 bit.
