Hi Guys, how does the CC-BY-SA-3.0 license work? for example let's say that I would like to sell a Eurorack Mutable Instruments module on my site, but keeping it original so without modifying it, I take Eagle I make the Rings pcb, I build the identical module but change the name for example in Mutated Instruments Pinko, can I sell it? 😕
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!
Did you ask Google?

You did not say you would "give appropriate credit" and some other bits.
Ideally you will read the whole license and see what else applies.

Free legal advice (such as from me) is not worth anything.

I'm not sure exactly how that license works, but If you clone any of the Mutable Instruments boards and sell them you will have a lot of competition.
There are several different DIY "Rings" boards out there already today. I got mine from Synthcube. There is a slightly different version at Modular Addict, and yet another from Magpie Modular. Amazingsynth.com has clones of nearly every Mutable Instruments module made.
It is easy to find cheap board and panel sets for all the Mutable stuff. Most has the name removed from the board or documentation. My "rings" board has no name. The documentation which came from a different site is called "sings" while the board shown on the Amazingsynth site says "grins."
Finding good documentation to match these boards has proven a bit more difficult. Pre flashed ARM chips are also a bit hard to find, but the source code and often the binary files are on git hub for those who can make their own.
It is my guess that using a name that's real close to Mutable Instruments could also bring some legal action your way.

Yes, the PCBs I also noticed that the name changes, but you say that it is the same thing as a completed module?
I have a "DIY rings" board and a "DIY braids" board, both from Synthcube. Both have the "cc-by-sa Oliver Gillet" statement screened on to them front and back along with the version number and the date. They are also labeled "DIY rings" and "DIY braids" with the Synthcube name and logo on the back. Otherwise they are identical to the kit version from Mutable. My boards are dated 2015, so the new stuff may be different.
Amazingsynth states on their web site that they have changed the names of the boards at the request of Mutable Instruments. Rings became Grins and Element became Elephant. It is not known whether this "request" came as a simple email from Mutable, or a registered letter from Mutable's legal counsel. Some of these vendors state that no support for the DIY version is available from Mutable and such requests will not be acknowledged.
None of these boards are available with a direct copy of the Mutable Instruments front panel. Synthcube generally offers multiple different panel designs for these boards.....I go for the cheapest stuff.
Since there are many vendors, most already well established doing this already, there isn't much market space left for a newcomer, unless you have something different or unique to offer.
