Total cost of ownership is the point. It costs a lot to commute from a castle in the middle of nowhere to your job in NYC or worse, Tokyo. It costs more than the purchase price to maintain the estate EVERY YEAR than the purchase price.

A lot of these places would probably make great inns. Maintenance could be quite challenging.. No question some of these places are spectacular.

In my doddering years I might think kindly on a reconverted ICBM silo - surely there'd be enough "basement" to accomodate anything I want to do.... And no solicitors, either.
