In looking at Nelson's classic article Cascode-Amp-Design I had an idea. If we took this simplified circuit, Subsituted a IRF240 for the top transistor use our little buddy the LD1014D for the botom transistor and use a 9V voltage reference in stead of the 4V reference wouldn't that make a neat little 2W source follower? Would this power jfet exibit less distortion being used in a cascode ?

No. F3 is using a cascode voltage amp. This would be a source follower and the voltage across the Jfet would not be critical.
