throwing a spanner in the works.. lol Little Super Deck
by the same man that brought us acrylic platters, inverted jewel bearings and DC motors way back in the early 80's. Arthur knows his stuff. if you look at Roy Gandy of Rega personal turntable it bears a striking resemblance to the Funk Firm's Sapphire but who got their first?...

That FF LSD looks nice! Seems a bit light at only 15 pounds though? Especially compared to the 65 pound VPI Classic. I also get the benefit of the longer arm with the VPI and the ability to upgrade to a 12" arm later if I get the urge.
I got my DL-110 and Jelco 14g headshell today. I mounted it to my SL-1200, set to Baerwald , force to 1.8g, level VTA. I'm impressed! The dynamics I lost with the DL-103R going to the 1.5W SET are back! Of course this is a 1.6mV cart vs. the 0.25mV on the same system. Bass is a tad muddy, highs not as extended and it is a touch cold compared to the DL-103R/Rega combo ... BUT ... it is not broken in yet.
Rumble and motor noise is all but gone on the SL-1200.
I also noticed the music is much more cohesive sounding. I am guessing due to the direct drive vs. belt-driven platter.

i would not worry about the weight of a TT to judge sonic ability.
give the DL110 about 50hrs or so then start playing with the VTA to get it somewhere you like. after about 200hrs things will get tighter with the DL110.
i always liked the SL1200 but never liked the arm (but always liked the on the fly VTA) and i personally think its the one point that lets them down, that and having a transformer built in on the plinth.
i'm keeping my fingers crossed that Technics give us a new no frills SL with the VTA adjuster but blank armboard to mount our own arms, that really would set the cat amongst the pigeons.

A Herbie's mat really helped kill rumble and motor noise.

The Technics has nice mid-bass drive and definition, even with the stock tonearm.

Hi Nigel,
What are your specific doubts about the Jelco arms? Any specific model? I haven't listened to any of the SA-750 series.. Only the lower cost ones (which I liked.) Thank you..
Soft and a bit washed out. Like off of a domestic turntable ( Sansui SR 222 perhaps or JVC lower cost DD ). Could be I was unlucky with Goldring 1042. Usuallly it can't fail. I heard the Lenco GL 75 arm with Linn K9, sublime when looking at price, new bearing sourced ). It is a better sound although a bit the same in texture. People usually throw them away. Better Origine Live sound very deep and airy. We use them on the Garrard 501. Although expensive 501 has a mini waiting list these days ( 6 months ) . I will never be able to have one. They genuinely cost a lot too make, more like a 1 car for the maching. Belt drives often are mad from simple chuncks. 50 sold and 20 L'art du son verson a a guess. I's about 5 a year. If we could make a Lenco that would please me. Seeing they are plenty arround it could be a tough sale.
