Looking to install an inverter in my car. It's a van. Sometimes I need to plug in a drill, vacuum cleaner, an amp to test. Nothing too current hungry.
I've looked in the past into some inverters.. my car alternator I think is 130A.
I see some 150-300w inverters plugged into cigarette lighter.. can a cigarette lighter really output 300 watts?
I Have a 2 or 4 gauge wire running from battery. Need to put it to use) I've looked into energizer invertors before
I believe they are still square wave inverters.
Any other options for my needs? Clean sine wave inverter by a company who knows what they are doing. Does not need to be huge. But output 500 watts maybe.. I think 900w is the max an alternator can provide considering car needs some current too

I looked into these energizer series. They have 900w version too.

When was the last time you saw a mains supply as a square wave ?
Never.
Some things will fry in short order when run on square wave.
you need to allow for the start up surge, not just what its steady state power draw is.
If you have 2 or 4 awg run to the mounting spot, why would you even consider a (toy) cig adapter version ?
I suggest you do more research.
Square wave.
Modified sine wave.
True sine wave.

Yes thanks. Ive read a little.
There are modified sine wave.(those energizer from home depot)
Pulse width modulated(tripp power)
And true sine waves.
I think I can go with around 800-1500 watt inverters .
Of course ideally I need true sine wave.
But some people mentioned that pulse width mdulated onverters are ediquate.
Basically I need inverter for drill, angle grinder, vacuum cleaner.. test an amp once in a while. Would PM inverter be ok.
Well I'll try to find true sine wave used..

Probably ok with power tools but not an amplifier. They are designed for running motors mainly and fridges and such like, not amplifiers. sorry PM you mean PWM?

Yes pwm. Pulse width modulation I think. Tripp lite makes such inverters. Can be found cheap online used. New are almost as much as true sine wave
Yes. pulse width modulation is what I thought you ment, so, I wouldn't advise using them with amps
So Iam looking to buy xantrex 1000 watt true sine wave.
Wire will need to run around 10 feet max. Xantrex support said I need 2/0 or 1/0.. those seem to be extremely thick . The tech support guy did not seem to know much and was on the phone to just chat around and get callers off the phone.
I Ran 1200WATT amps With 10feet. 4awg or 4 gauge wires before. Isnt 1/0 an overkill. I am thinking maybe 2awg will work. 2 gauge.
Just want to have piece of mind that everything works well . Taking shortest distance from battery to inverter I may mange 8 feet. But let's say it will be 10 feet long wire

Use ohm's law. You want to keep the voltage drop across the cable as low as possible so it doesn't heat up and also so you don't loose power
Thanks I've read few articles about voltage drop.
Maybe able to keep wire length around 7- 8 feet.
I think I'll go 2 awg.. see if things work well. Then add a parallel 4awg line if necessary
